In 2022, more than 55,000 people visited the site

A hundred students from Leonor Canalejas visit the Tossal de la Cala, which will shortly undergo a new archaeological performance

27 January 2023
Tossal de La Cala en Benidorm.

One hundred 3rd and 4th-year Primary school students from CEIP Leonor Canalejas have visited the Tossal de la Cala site today, led by an archaeologist who explained to them what life was like in this Roman fort from the 1st century BC.

The Councilor for Historical and Cultural Heritage, Ana Pellicer, indicated that "this visit is part of the campaign of activities that we offer to the educational centers of Benidorm so that the students get to know the site up close, thus complementing on many occasions the subjects and knowledge that they deal with throughout the course”.

Pellicer indicated that "in Benidorm, we are lucky to have important heritage assets that, without a doubt, are an attraction for the educational community, the city and even other parts of the region, which each year participates more actively in the activities that we propose”.

The mayor remarked that "these school visits make the younger population prescribers of our historical heritage among their family and social environment, for which we achieve a double objective: to promote the training of students and at the same time give visibility and dissemination to our assets, in this case, Tossal de la Cala”.

As she recalled, “in 2022 more than 55,000 people visited the Tossal de la Cala; an influx that was constant and regular throughout the year, with peak attendance in the main holiday periods or coinciding with festivities”. In fact, "during the past summer we reached a new record of visits, adding more than 13,700 visitors between the months of July and August, around 2,200 more than in the same period of the previous year."

Pellicer is convinced that "the interest among residents and visitors will continue to grow once the museum project of the 'castellum' is carried out, included in the 'Benidorm DTI + Seguro' Tourism Sustainability Plan", and that it is expected to start in the near future.

In addition to the school visits, those who want to learn more in-depth and in detail about how life was lived in the 'castellum' or the role that this fort played during the Sertorian Wars, can participate in the guided tours that take place on Fridays every hour between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.; and on Saturdays and Sundays, also every hour, starting at 10:00 a.m. and with a last showing at 1:00 p.m. The guided tour can be arranged by emailing visitatossal@benidorm.org
