Experts and artists exalt the virtues of Benidorm presenting it as a "beautiful and interesting" city at the same time

09 June 2017
Expertos y artistas exaltan las virtudes de Benidorm presentándola como una ciudad “bella e interesante” a la vez

The Assembly Hall hosts two talks about 'Benidorm model' and the lifestyle that inspires its urban fabric

The exhibition of paintings and collages 'Gran Benidorm' by Óscar Tusquets, illustrates the 60th anniversary of the approval of the PGOU

The urban setting of Benidorm is more sustainable, generates a friendlier city and is more respectful of the territory. But also, and precisely because of that configuration, it is an "interesting and beautiful" city, as the architect, painter and designer Óscar Tusquets emphasized today in a day where experts and artists have talked about the benefits of the 'Benidorm model' , What inspires those who inhabit it and visit, and the attempts that others have made to copy it.

This day with Benidorm as a protagonist has developed in the hall of the Town Hall of Benidorm, and has started with the talk 'Virtues of a town planning'. A talk moderated by Óscar Tusquets; Included in a monographic day on Benidorm in which the architects Juli Capella, Jordi Garcés and José Luis Camarasa took part; And organized on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the General Plan of Benidorm and the arrival of the exhibition 'Great Benidorm' to the Boca del Calvari Museum.

The mayor, Toni Pérez, was in charge of opening this day of debate and reflection organized by the City Council, in collaboration with Oscar Tusquets and the hand of the architect Julio Muñoz. To the same have been approached, among others, the autonomic secretary of Tourism, Francesc Colomer; The councilor of Urbanism, Lourdes Caselles; The president of the hotel management Hosbec, Toni Mayor; Members of the municipal corporation; And local architects and entrepreneurs.

Tusquets has defended the urban model of Benidorm, and has ensured that other localities have copied the height "but not the density" and "have become unpleasant cities."

During his speech, Capella has confronted the model of vertical compact city that embodies Benidorm with the city of extensive, showing how the former consumes fewer resources and allows a more efficient management of services. It has also raised how the model Benidorm generates a greater "enjoyment to the people". "There is something better than building in height, and you have done it: it is building in height and making street at the same time," and added that "the great magnet and the interesting thing is that the morphology of Benidorm makes people enjoyment".

The architect Jordi Garcés also remarked that "Benidorm chose a clear and well-designed urban model" which led to "a model of success." A success that other destinations or other cities have tried to achieve by exporting the building in height but have not reached "because they stayed halfway."

For its part, the municipal architect, José Luis Camarasa, has reviewed the main characteristics of the vertical model embodied in the first General Plan, whose original file has been exposed for the first time in the hall of the City Hall on the occasion of this day. Camarasa explained that the key to the Benidorm model is "not to build more, if not better".

This monographic day in Benidorm has not been limited to analyze the benefits of the vertical model and to reflect on its urban scope, but also has approached the city from a more personal and sensory prism. About the 'Life of this city', theme of the second of the talks, have shared impressions the designer Javier Mariscal and the journalists Joaquín Luna - a journalist in the newspaper La Vanguardia - and Toni Cabot - director of the newspaper Information.

Luna has had an impact on how Benidorm "has achieved authenticity" and "has been faithful to his personality" to "the last consequences", despite the resistance and criticism he encountered along the way. On the happiness and the good sensations that Benidorm arouses from its urbanistic concept has spoken the director of the newspaper Information, whereas the artist Javier Mariscal has projected images of a history that drew four decades ago, that runs in a city "that never sleeps" And so equal to Benidorm that even has its island. "Benidorm," he said, "is my age, 67 years old."

'Great Benidorm'

From the beauty of Benidorm, its urbanism and the life that is breathed in its streets speak the creations of Oscar Tusquets that from tomorrow until August 13 can be seen in the Museum Boca del Calvari within the exhibition 'Great Benidorm' About 40 works in different supports and elaborated with diverse techniques conform this sample, that debuted in Barcelona, and that later it could be extracted in London. He was also present at the Art Biennale of the British capital, where two works were exhibited.

In 'Gran Benidorm' there are a score of photographic collages, drawings, oils and watercolors centered on the Ensanche de Levante, which reflect the urbanistic essence of 'the vertical city', but also 'show that Benidorm is beautiful' and Exhibit "all the life that is in it and which has seldom been explained."
