The exhibition, 'A renaissance esthete', opens this Wednesday and addresses the close relationship of the sailor with Benidorm, his extensive professional career and his defense of traditions

An exhibition in Boca del Calvari looks over the figure of the versatile Admiral Julio Guillén Tato

Exposición de Julio Guillén Tato

Benidorm opens this Wednesday, December 14, a new exhibition at Boca del Calvari Museum, a "very graphic" exhibition that "looks over the figure of the multifaceted admiral Don Julio Guillén Tato". This has been said by the councillor of Historical and Cultural Heritage, Ana Pellicer, today, who indicated that the exhibition, 'Julio Guillén Tato, a Renaissance esthete' wants to "bring the local and visiting population closer to who Guillén Tato was, review his extensive professional career, remember his defense and contribution to the maintenance of roots and traditions, and address his close and prolific relationship with our city, which is endorsed with his designation as an Adoptive Son”.

Pellicer indicated that "the sailor and historian Julio Guillén Tato was passionate about the sea and Benidorm, where in his summer seasons he was a simple neighbor, first in his house in Santa Faz street and later in l'Almafrà".

Director of the Naval Museum and member of the Royal Academy of Language and History, among other positions and occupations, Guillén Tato was also "one of the people most committed to the first development of Benidorm, working side by side with the mayor Pedro Zaragoza undertaking enthusiastic and altruistic actions that favored advances and improvements of public services and spaces from the 50s”.

Examples of this, she pointed out, are "the admiral's mediation to create a new school group in Benidorm or the land he ceded to the City Council to expand Plaça de la Senyoria, in whose design he was personally involved, as he also did with the remodeling of Carreró dels Gats or Costera del Barco”.

Therefore, she deepened, "the mark of the admiral continues to be very present in Benidorm" and "for this reason, this exhibition is proposed in a very significant year, which marks the 125th anniversary of his birth and 50 years since his death ”.

Pellicer explained that "through this exhibition, we also want to make the figure of Guillén Tato known to the new generations, who are going to play a prominent role in this project since collaboration with the Artistic Baccalaureate students of IES Pere Mª Orts i Bosch has been plannedand that will complement the exhibition”.

The councillor has invited the public to “visit this exhibition, which opens on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and discover a prolific character who also excelled in the study and contribution to heraldry or cartography; that in his passion for Benidorm he attracted the filming of 'Alba América' to our beaches; and whom the ABC newspaper included in its series 'Españoles Célebres'”.
