The conference, in which almost fifty public workers participate, addresses issues such as the involvement of men in care, family life and work, and mental burden

Conference in Benidorm to promote equality and co-responsibility among municipal workers

12 December 2023
Jornadas formativas en Benidorm para promover la igualdad y la corresponsabilidad entre los trabajadores municipales

Benidorm City Council is developing training sessions aimed at municipal workers to promote equal participation of men and women in family life and work. The course, called "Co-responsibility in gender equality", is part of the Equality Plan for Municipal Personnel of the Benidorm City Council and is promoted by the Departments of Equality and Human Resources, within the Co-Responsible Plan of the Ministry of Equality, of which Benidorm is part.

The Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, explained that there are nearly fifty officials who participate in these training sessions, in which different issues are addressed to promote this real equality in all areas of daily life. Among them, “the clarification of basic concepts such as the differences between formal equality or real equality; feminism and machismo; the patriarchy; differential socialization; co-responsibility; or conciliation,” explained the councillor.

Within the agenda, issues such as the use of time and the involvement of men in home care are also addressed; micro-machismo and unequal practices in the workplace; how to promote co-responsibility in the workplace; internal policies that favor family life and work; how gender stereotypes affect men and women in everyday life; the different models of masculinity; the role of the media and the importance of inclusive language; how machismo affects men and what role they should adopt in the fight for equality; about who bears the mental burden of care and how to promote change; and from where to review sexist practices and from where to build pro-egalitarian actions.

The councillors of Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, and of Human Resources, Ana Soliveres, have highlighted that actions such as these training sessions “come to reinforce the work that is being carried out by the City Council to advance full and real gender equality among municipal workers", as well as for "that this equality transcends the workplace and also extends to the rest of the facets of their daily lives."
