A sample of photographs from the Municipal Archive reviews moments and places of Benidorm's relationship with water

The commemoration of World Water Day comes to l’Espai d’Art Urbà ‘El Pont’

La commemoració del Dia Mundial de l'Aigua arriba a l'Espai d'Art Urbà 'El Pont'...

The commemoration of World Water Day, which is celebrated this March 22, has also come to l'Espai d'Art Urbà 'El Pont' with an exhibition in which some of the most iconic passages of Benidorm relationship are reviewed with this vital resource, mainly during the first seven decades of the last century. The mayor, Toni Pérez, together with the councilors of the Water Cycle and Historical Heritage, José Ramón González de Zárate and Ana Pellicer, have visited this exhibition today, which will be on display in the coming months.

After the visit, De Zárate explained that "until it became an international benchmark in efficient water management, Benidorm had to overcome serious difficulties and invest many financial resources to guarantee the supply and availability of flows".

The mayor has pointed out that “precisely the lack of water for a good part of the last century made the city aware of the capital importance of this resource and led it to plan a management system that was highly effective and efficient and in which every drop is get the most out of it ”. “Now we have a hydraulic network that is around 94% yield,” he recalled, “and this is also a direct consequence of the investments that have been made over the last six decades, since the supply works and drinking water were completed. arrived in Benidorm ”.

The arrival of drinking water is one of the episodes that is commemorated in the exhibition, "composed of ten images, distributed in six backlit 'muppis' and which come from the photographic and bibliographic funds of our Municipal Archive", as has been pointed out by the Councilor for Historical Heritage, Ana Pellicer.

Among the photographs recovered for this exhibition and that can be seen in l’Espai d’Art there are several from municipal public sources, graphic testimonies of the supply works or snapshots of the first hydraulic infrastructures of the city.

Pellicer has detailed that "in addition to photographs, for this exhibition publications have been selected from the years 1959 and 1960 that appeared in the Municipal Bulletin of the City Council." These copies "can be consulted on the municipal website –www.benidorm.org- thanks to the constant task of digitizing the Municipal Archive holdings with which we are bringing the history of Benidorm closer to the general public."
