The works, with a budget of 162,535 euros, will begin at the end of the month and will be completed before Easter

Benidorm will adapt the Armada Española sewage collector to improve its hydraulic capacity and pumping to the treatment plant

21 January 2025
Benidorm adecuará el colector de saneamiento de Armada Española para mejorar su capacidad hidráulica y el bombeo a la depuradora

Benidorm City Council will begin work in the next few days to adapt the last section of the drainage collector on Armada Española Avenue at the junction with Jaime I. This work is intended to solve the current problem with the collector on the avenue, which arrives below the level of the chamber that receives it.

This situation, added to the low slope of the collector in several sections of Armada Española, leads to a slow flow rate and this increase in depths inside. All of which translates into a substantial reduction in the hydraulic capacity of the collector, sometimes reaching its maximum capacity.

The planned solution is to correct the slope of the last 45 metres with a new PVC 500 collector that avoids the negative overhang of the current one. The execution period will be two months to have completed the work before Easter.

The total budget for this intervention amounts to 162,535 euros and will be carried out by the concessionaire of the Integrated Water Cycle, Hidraqua, charged to the Service Renewal Funds, although the Public Entity for Wastewater Treatment (EPSAR) will finance 90% of the cost (146,281.50 euros).

The action has its origin in the need of the neighbouring municipality of Finestrat to undertake emergency work to renew and expand its pumping system towards the Benidorm WWTP. A work that Finestrat requests from EPSAR “to renew the pumping line towards Benidorm from the Wastewater Pumping Station (EBAR) of Cala de Finestrat” explained the councillor for the Water Cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate.

The intervention was declared an emergency by EPSAR since the objective was to reduce the discharges into the public domain caused by the Finestrat EBAR and this involved a new channelling along Pajares Street, already in the municipal area of Benidorm. Thus, the renewal of the pumping of the EBAR of the neighbouring municipality will imply a significant increase in its future pumping capacity towards the Benidorm system.

Thus, because of the new situation, it is necessary to “provide more capacity to the sewage network because we will also collect wastewater from Finestrat from the La Cala area that we have to pump towards the La Vila Joiosa treatment plant, but also towards ours” indicated González de Zárate.

The councillor, however, has stated that the works “will not affect traffic and only part of the bicycle lane and the garden area will be occupied”. Once the intervention is finished, the tiles in the area will be replaced, as well as the affected gardening.
