Benidorm City Council is going to temporarily condition and as a provisional parking part of Salto del Agua plot reserved for the future Police Station of the National Police, after “the Government of Spain has relegated the construction of the new police building until 2024 ”. This has been reported today by the mayor, Toni Pérez, who has clarified that “recently, at the request of the national deputy of the Popular Party Agustín Almodóbar, the Executive of Pedro Sánchez indicated that the new police facilities will have to wait at least 3 more years , a decision that, without a doubt, has been a heavy blow, since the Ministry of the Interior has had the project for the future Police Station drawn up by the municipal technicians of the City Council since 2017 ”.

The mayor recalled that “in August 2015, the plenary session approved the transfer of a 4,971-square-meter plot to the Ministry next to the Palace of Justice; a floor that had the approval of the Interior to meet the necessary parameters to house the police facilities ". Two years later, "and complying with the commitment that the City Council adopted with the Government of Spain to speed up the construction of the Police Station", the City Council presented the basic project "following all the parameters and requirements set by the Ministry, but since then little or we have heard nothing from the Police Station ”.

"Now, after verifying that the PGEs delay their construction until 2024, we have considered that, in the meantime, it is appropriate to give that land a use, in this case conditioning approximately one third of the plot as a  parking lot, following the municipal development strategy of sustainable mobility with which in recent years we have created parking spaces at the different entrances to Benidorm ”, he pointed out.

Specifically, some 1,800 square meters will be set up as a parking lot, thus generating about a hundred parking spaces. The mayor has pointed out that “many users of the Palace of Justice already use part of this land as improvised parking. Starting this week, they will have adequate space to park their vehicles, since the land has been cleared and leveled ”. In fact, the lower part of the car park opened today.

Police Station Project

The basic project for the new police station drawn up and presented by the City Council proposes a building with 9,600 square meters distributed in basement, ground floor and two floors, and which occupies practically the entire plot. The facilities have three spaces differentiated by their use and that do not intersect, such as the public, the police and the detention area.

Within the public service spaces, the offices will be installed for the processing of the DNI and the passport. In the part for the exclusive use of the police officers, a large shooting gallery, a gym area and changing rooms for the officers, an office and a parking lot for police vehicles with its own small workshop have been designed, which are added to the offices and spaces of the different police units. With regard to the area of those arrested, an underground communication between the cells and the Palace of Justice has been planned, which will simplify transfers.

The parliamentary group of the Popular Party in the Congress of Deputies will present an amendment to the General State Budgets, so that the accounts for 2021 already provide the necessary item to advance the start of the works for next year.
