Benidorm observes a minute of silence in memory of the last two victims of the macho violence in Seville and Salou

26 June 2017
Benidorm guarda un minuto de silencio en memoria de las dos últimas víctimas de la violencia machista en Sevilla y Salou

The municipal corporation of Benidorm has held today a recess in the plenary session to celebrate a minute of silence at the gates of the City Hall as a sign of mourning for the last two victims of sexist violence, killed this past weekend. The mayor, Toni Pérez, and the mayor of Equality, Paquita Ripoll, have led the corporation in this silent protest against gender violence, to which municipal workers have joined as well as residents of the city.

The first victim, 39, was stabbed in Seville by her ex-husband, 54, who had a restraining order. The assailant, who later turned himself into the police, also wounded a cousin of the deceased with a knife. Meanwhile, on Sunday in Salou (Tarragona), a 43-year-old man turned himself into police and confessed to killing his 29-year-old wife, who was found dead inside the attacker's vehicle.

With these two new cases, there are already 30 women victims of gender-based violence in Spain in the course of 2017. In addition, five minors have also been killed because of gender-based violence and another 12 have been orphaned. Once again, it is worth remembering the free telephone number 016 of advice and information on gender violence that, in addition, does not leave trace in the invoice of the phone bill.
