The victims are two women aged 78 and 36, allegedly murdered by their partners in the municipalities of Jaén and Girona

Benidorm condemns the two sexist crimes confirmed in recent hours in our country

12 March 2025
minuto de silencio

Benidorm City Council observed a minute of silence this afternoon to express its condemnation of the two latest murders due to gender-based violence confirmed in our country by the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, following two exhaustive investigations to clarify the causes of death. The victims are two women allegedly murdered by their partners in the municipalities of Martos (Jaén) and Blanes (Girona).

The victim, who lived in the province of Jaén, was 78 years old and was allegedly murdered by her 80-year-old husband on March 4, 2025. The second crime, in the province of Girona, occurred two days later, on March 6, when a 36-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her 53-year-old partner. Both are in custody.

The silent rally took place outside City Hall and was led by the First Deputy Mayor, Ana Pellicer, and the Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, along with numerous members of the City Council, who expressed their unanimous rejection of this sexist murder.
With the confirmation of both cases, the number of women murdered due to gender-based violence in Spain in 2025 has risen to four, while since 2003—when data collection began—1,297 women have lost their lives at the hands of their partners or ex-partners.

The Department of Equality, headed by Councilor Ángela Zaragozí, reminds us that Benidorm City Council has staff specialized in gender-based violence to provide free counseling to any woman who feels threatened. They also reiterate that victims have access to the free 016 hotline, which leaves no trace on their phone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from their cell phone call logs. This service is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and in 52 languages.

Similarly, in an emergency, you can call 112 or the emergency numbers of the National Police (091) and the Civil Guard (062). If a call is not possible and a dangerous situation arises, you can use the ALERTCOPS app, which will send an alert signal with geolocation to the police. All of these assistance methods can be activated by the victim and also by anyone who knows or suspects a case of gender-based violence. It is a duty of all society.
