The Department of Equality recalls that victims have at their disposal the free telephone number 016

Benidorm condemns the last two crimes for sexist violence, which brings the number of women murdered to 28 in 2022

17 August 2022
Minuto de silencio en la puerta del Ayuntamiento de Benidorm.

The City Council of Benidorm has celebrated a minute of silence this afternoon in the Plaza SSMM Reyes de España to condemn and reject the last two crimes of gender violence registered in Spain and that brings to 28 the number of women murdered by their partners to ex-partners in so far in 2022. A figure that amounts to 1,158 since 2003, the date on which this type of case began to be recorded.

The mayor, Toni Pérez, has led this silent rally in which the victims of these latest crimes have been remembered. The first of the deaths took place in Seville on Saturday. The victim, a 44-year-old woman, was found dead at dawn in an abandoned powerhouse. The woman had been stabbed with the same weapon with which her aggressor and her partner later took their own lives, according to police investigations.

Also on Saturday, the second crime was recorded in Valladolid. The victim was a 54-year-old woman who was stabbed by her partner. The victim's mother also lost her life in the fire caused by the aggressor and she burned down the house in which both women were. Previously, the man had set fire to another house, ending the life of a 78-year-old man.

The Department of Equality recalls that the City Council has staff specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates once again that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to eliminate it from the mobile call log. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and in 52 languages.
