Benidorm completes the works to renovate hydraulic infrastructure and improve accessibility on Beniardá Avenue

19 January 2024
Benidorm finaliza las obras de renovación de infraestructuras hidráulicas y mejora de la accesibilidad en la avenida Beniardá

Benidorm City Council has completed the works to renew the hydraulic infrastructure and improve accessibility on Beniardá Avenue, one of the roads with the most pedestrian and vehicle traffic as it is one of the main entrances and exits to the city.

On the occasion of the end of this work, the councillors of Citizenship Participation, Water Cycle, Mobility and Street Cleaning have travelled to the avenue; Ana Pellicer, José Ramón González de Zárate, Francis Muñoz and Luis Navarro, accompanied by technicians and managers from Hidraqua, the concessionaire company that carried out the works. A performance that has been visited on previous occasions by the 'A pie de calle' campaign in the company of the neighbourhood residents.

After a year since the start of the work, it has been practically completed. Some works have consisted of the renewal of the drinking water networks and their respective home connections, replacing the existing fibre cement ones with others made of ductile cast iron. The firefighting network has also been improved with the installation of new underground hydrants, the storm drains of buildings have been channelled and sections of wastewater collectors that were in poor condition have been renovated, as well as the execution of pipelines to house municipal services.

At the urban scene level, the avenue has acquired a new image with the renewal of the pavement with a non-slip one and the improvement of accessibility of both public roads and access to premises and buildings. Likewise, new trees have been installed with their corresponding irrigation network, thus following an aesthetic identical to other emblematic avenues of the city such as Avenida Jaime I or Avenida Europa. The new pavement along the entire avenue is the same as the existing one on Jaime I up to Paseo de Poniente, “which also gives uniformity to these roads,” said González de Zárate. In addition, the width of the sidewalks has been significantly expanded so that pedestrian traffic is much more comfortable and “bottlenecks” are avoided at certain points, which previously occurred.

In general terms, around 530 meters of the drinking water network have been renewed with ductile iron pipes, 18 new home connections, four new hydrants, 94 meters of wastewater network renewed with trenchless technology, and twelve downspouts have been channelled. stormwater and renovated around 3,700 square meters of pavement, with an overall budget for the works of 780,000 euros.

In the coming days, the works will be definitively completed with the installation of new street furniture and the creation of a new pedestrian crossing that will cross Beniardá Avenue at La Nucía Street. The asphalt affected by the work will also be renewed soon and the corresponding road paint will be replaced. This asphalt renovation will be extended to La Nucia and Sella streets, which were pending paving due to the impact of the works on Avenida Beniardá.

José Ramón González de Zárate has indicated that the local government feels “very satisfied” with the result of these actions, so “the boulevard of Beniardá Avenue will soon allow people to walk to the commercial centre of the city.” “We are working with the future” he added.

The mayor has reiterated that "all these adjacent streets have been given a new life" and highlighted in terms of road traffic that "vehicles will no longer have to go up to Estación Street to turn around, but rather on the street itself." La Nucía will give way so that they can go down towards the intersection with Jaime I and Tomás Ortuño. “Not only are we satisfied, but also the neighbours. The neighbourhood has experienced a great change with 100% accessibility, water, sewage, lighting and all services.”
