In addition to the forestry work on an area of 60 hectares, eleven fire control cameras have been installed

Benidorm completes fire prevention work in El Moralet park

25 June 2024
Benidorm finaliza los trabajos de prevención contra incendios en el parque El Moralet

Benidorm City Council has completed the fire prevention work in El Moralet Park, an action that began last February and is complemented by those previously carried out for the adaptation and creation of trails included in the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy and Integrator (EDUSI) as one of the main projects.

The recovery actions in this environment focused on fire prevention, which in recent months has involved an expansion of the park's interior signage, the creation of a perimeter firebreak throughout the park, and the installation of safety barriers. protection using lever-type fences, as well as the restoration to the initial state of the roads affected by the vehicle traffic necessary for the execution of the works. The Councilor for Parks and Gardens, José Ramón González de Zárate, visited the area this morning to verify the completion of this intervention.

Thus, the forestry work has consisted of clearings and thinnings to clear, clean and remove the existing herbaceous, shrubby and tree vegetation as a preventive treatment against forest fires over 60 hectares. Pine trees have also been pruned to eliminate dry or diseased branches and the lowest branches of the tree have been removed, thus avoiding drastic pruning that would have compromised the subsequent growth and development of the tree. In the same way, some dead, dying or affected by pests or diseases and other deformed conifers that were in the park have been cut.

As for signage, signs have been installed at the five main entrances with indications of restrictions and recommendations for the correct use of the environment and the prevention of fires.

Regarding the installation of fire control cameras, a total of eleven have been placed, especially at the entrances to the park. These devices have a rechargeable battery and solar panel and are placed on columns eight meters high.

Finally, some collections of garbage and rubbish dumps detected throughout the park have also been removed, as well as the vehicular paths and cycle paths have been conditioned and returned to their original state.

González de Zárate highlighted that Benidorm "continues to invest in this park, which is a great green lung for the city" and stressed that, although it is already conditioned after the first investments made, "now the fundamental objective was fire prevention." To this end, he indicated, "On the one hand, cleaning, clearing and removal of trees that were susceptible to burning quickly and, on the other, the installation of fire cameras for prevention have been carried out."

In total, he specified, "There are eleven cameras powered by solar energy, wirelessly connected to the security and firefighting services to have the greatest speed and diligence in case of need."

The El Moralet park, the mayor indicated, “is enjoyed by thousands of people since its recovery and that invites us to continue investing in it to complete a great project, a great park, which with the passage of time improves and “It has become a reference in the design of the green coastline that we proposed in our strategy since October 2015,” he added.

The entire intervention “has been completed before the summer, as we said it would be,” concluded González de Zárate, who has also highlighted the renaturalization of the entire environment of the TRAM route as it passes through El Moralet, which has already been completed.
