Benidorm City Council will act in Bernat de Sarrià to reduce the risk of flooding

15 September 2023
El Ayuntamiento de Benidorm actuará en Bernat de Sarrià para reducir el riesgo de inundaciones

Next week, Benidorm City Council plans to begin work to expand the rainwater collector on Bernat de Sarrià Avenue, in the section between Juan Fuster Zaragoza and Zamora streets, to improve drainage and avoid occasional flooding. of heavy rains. In this way, the works will also contribute to significantly improving road safety and the quality of life of citizens, as highlighted by the acting mayor and councilor for the Water Cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate, who recalled that these Up until now, damming was “frequent” and even caused “water to enter some establishments,” with the consequent impact on individuals.

The works, which have an estimated execution period of one month, will consist of the installation of a PVC collector with a nominal diameter of 250 and 315 mm and 76 m in length as well as its corresponding branches for the connection of new collections and the replacement of the affected asphalt and road signs, as reported by the delegate councillor. To do this, work will be done on the sidewalk opposite the Ensanche de Levante, building “a collector that will connect to the Juan Fuster Zaragoza stormwater network, and installing scuppers.”

The budget for the action amounts to 71,129.85 euros, 30,000 of which are financed by the Provincial Council of Alicante, through a subsidy that covers 42.17% of the total amount. This subsidy from the Provincial Council comes from the call for aid for the repair and first establishment, reform, or major repair of hydraulic supply and sanitation infrastructure.

González de Zárate has insisted that the main objective is “to put an end to the significant water damming that occurs when there is heavy rain, which not only generates inconvenience but also affects road safety.” Furthermore, the acting mayor has recalled that "in Benidorm, there is a lot of money invested in the subsoil", and it is precisely these types of investments, which are often perceived as annoying works, that make it possible that while in other very nearby towns, there are turbidity problems with drinking water as a result of the rains, in Benidorm there are no incidents in the service.”
