Both projects involve an investment of around 300,000 euros
The works to improve the sewage system in Armada Española and the drainage of rainwater in Elche Park are progressing at a good pace
The Water Cycle Department has two important works underway which, once completed, will solve some problems that occur occasionally in some parts of the municipality. On the one hand, these are the works for a new underground pumping system located in Elche Park whose mission is to collect and pump the rainwater from the streets of Almendros or Maravall which flows into José Such and the park. And, on the other hand, the works to adapt the last section of the sewage collector on Avenida Armada Española at its confluence with Jaime I. This action will solve the problem that the collector on the road has due to the low gradient in several sections of it, which causes a slow flow rate and an increase in depths inside.
The work, despite its great complexity, is progressing at the desired pace and will be finished before Easter. This was confirmed this morning by Mayor Toni Pérez, who visited both projects accompanied by the Councillor for the Water Cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate, and the Councillor for Public Works and Space, Francis Muñoz.
As for the work in Elche Park, the new pumping station will be located next to the planters in the park and close to the swing area of the complex. The place where the work is being carried out is fenced and “does not impede the normal development of the people who walk, run or enjoy the park every day” said the Mayor. This work will also solve the problem in episodes of heavy rain since “the lack of the pumping and rainwater collection system caused the accumulation of water in the area and the consequent traffic cuts in Alcalde José Such, something that will no longer happen from now on”. This work involves an investment of 130,000 euros.
Regarding the work in Armada Española Avenue, the investment amounts to 162,535 euros and is being carried out by Hidraqua, charged to the Service Renewal Funds, although the Public Entity for Wastewater Treatment (EPSAR) will finance 90% of the cost (146,281.50 euros).
The work was created because of the need of the neighbouring municipality of Finestrat to undertake an emergency project to renew and expand its pumping system to the Benidorm WWTP. A project that Finestrat is requesting from EPSAR “to renew the pumping line to Benidorm from the Wastewater Pumping Station (WWTP) in Cala de Finestrat” explained the mayor.
The intervention was declared an emergency by EPSAR since the objective was to reduce the discharges caused by the Finestrat wastewater treatment plant, which had as a consequence the creation of a new channel along Pajares Street, already in the municipal area of Benidorm. Thus, the renewal of the pumping of the EBAR of the neighbouring municipality implies a significant increase in its future pumping capacity towards the Benidorm system. For this reason, Toni Pérez has specified that “it was necessary to provide more capacity to the sewage network because we will also collect wastewater from Finestrat from the La Cala area that we have to pump towards the La Vila Joiosa treatment plant, but also towards ours”.
The works, in any case, “do not affect traffic and only part of the bicycle lane and the garden area have been occupied”. Once the work is finished, the tiles in the area will be replaced, as well as the affected gardening.
