Words and music come together in an evocative proclamation for Holy Week in Benidorm
Benidorm continued its pre-Holy Week events last night with the traditional opening address, delivered this year by María José Sánchez, a member of a religious brotherhood. The address, a blend of spoken word and music thanks to the participation of the Benidorm Musical Union, evoked the city's key Holy Week traditions. The event took place at El Buen Pastor Parish, home to the Brotherhood of Nuestras Señora de la Esperanza y la Paz, of which the speaker is a member and this year holds the presidency of the local Holy Week Brotherhoods and Fraternities Association.
The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, joined the members of the brotherhoods at this traditional gathering, which was also attended by other members of the City Council, including the Councillor for Fiestas, Mariló Cebreros, and the regional deputy, José Ramón González de Zárate.
The mayor congratulated José Manuel Olvera, head of the Brotherhood of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza y la Paz and president of the Governing Board, as well as the heads and presidents of the other brotherhoods and confraternities in the city, who also participated in this event, along with a large number of priests from the various parishes.
Pérez expressed his hope that “we can experience the various events of Holy Week with full intensity,” “just as we have been able to do today, listening to this proclamation, which has allowed us to experience and participate in the processions of a complete Holy Week.” He also highlighted the great tradition in Benidorm of celebrating the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ and asked that “we never lose our devotion and essence.”
