The fire did not cause personal damage or affect the houses.

Scientific Police and Fire Department investigate the causes of the fire in Armanello area

17 May 2023
Incendio en Benidorm

The Scientific Police and the Fire Department are investigating the causes of the fire declared yesterday afternoon in the Armanello district, which "has resulted in no personal damage and no damage to the homes", according to the mayor, Toni Pérez, who together with the councilor of Citizen Security, Lorenzo Martínez, followed the evolution of the fire and the extinction work on the ground, for which the City Council "mobilized all the necessary municipal resources".

As already anticipated yesterday afternoon, a few hours after the fire was declared, apparently there were several outbreaks, a circumstance that the Scientific Police and Fire Department are now trying to clarify and determine.

Toni Pérez has highlighted "the rapid and accurate action" of the troops of the Regional Fire Department, who received the support of provincial and regional endowments and air resources -a helicopter and a seaplane-, as well as the Local Police of Benidorm and the National Police Corps.

They also actively participated in the Red Cross-device, which "together with the City Council set up a service post in the carrer de pilota of the Palau d'Esports l'Illa" where last night some 75 people who usually reside in the area were treated, and the Society for the Protection of Animals and Plants, which took care of the pets located at the scene of the fire. There was also "great collaboration from the municipal concessionaires."

The mayor pointed out that the municipal network of hydrants facilitated the action of the Firefighters and the control of the fire, and added that this service was reinforced with the presence of Cuba trucks from Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC).

At the request of the extinguishing device, excavators were also moved to the area to pour the earth and help put out the fire.

Toni Pérez affirmed that "the fire did not entail a serious risk, although it was very spectacular"; and he stressed that "the priority of the extinguishing device was that the fire did not affect any home", an objective that has been met.

During the operation, several incidents caused by the presence of a drone in the area of the fire were detected, which made extinguishing tasks difficult and put the aerial means of fighting the fire at risk. Thanks to the technology available to the Local Police Air Unit, it was possible to detect and intercept the device, as well as identify its owner, who was arrested and reported to the Spanish Aviation Safety Agency (AESA).

During the morning of today, they continued the work of refreshment in the area, which is recovering normality. Thus, this morning the competent authority authorized the setting up and opening of the private market that operates every Wednesday on Avenida Bernat de Sarriá, on a plot adjacent to the area of the fire.

Throughout the day, it is expected that traffic on the Camino de l'Armanello will be restored, which was cut yesterday to facilitate the extinction, as was also done on time on Comunidad Valenciana Avenue.

Remember that the district of l'Armanello is an urban land since the 1990 General Plan, pending development for decades, and that it is being managed by a group made up of the owners of that land, who promoted the plan a few years ago Widen Levante.

This urban plan has been in process for several years and is waiting to receive all the reports from supra-municipal administrations, including the one issued by the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation, to develop.
