The PSOE denounces the accumulation of rubbish and neglect of the park-and-ride car park on Lérida Street

The Socialist Municipal Group has once again drawn attention to what it describes as the poor management of basic public services by the local Partido Popular government, denouncing the deplorable state of neglect of the public park-and-ride car park located on Calle Lérida, in the Levante area.

Socialist spokesperson Cristina Escoda has strongly criticised the fact that this plot of more than 4,800 square metres, which was designated by the municipality to provide nearly 200 free parking spaces, has become an improvised dumping ground, with rubbish, discarded items and construction debris accumulating indiscriminately. “It is unacceptable that a key public space for mobility in one of Benidorm’s busiest tourist areas should look more like an illegal dump than a leading tourist destination,” she stressed.

In this regard, Escoda recalled that Mayor Toni Pérez and his team had publicly promoted the agreement for the transfer and preparation of the plot, expressly committing to the ongoing maintenance and cleaning of the site. “Once again, the PP’s announcements have come to nothing. They promised to eliminate the poor image of the site, but their lack of follow-up and failure to manage it have led to its complete neglect,” the councillor said.

The deterioration of the site is also causing growing concern in the area. As the spokesperson explained, “the accumulation of rubbish, together with the lack of lighting and unhygienic conditions, is creating a serious sense of insecurity at certain times of the day in this car park, directly affecting hospitality workers travelling to or returning from their shifts, residents of neighbouring residential buildings, and tourists staying in nearby hotels and apartments”.

The Socialist leader also warned of several homeless encampments within the park-and-ride car park itself. According to Escoda, this is a sensitive situation that requires action by the municipal Social Services.

For all these reasons, Cristina Escoda has called on Mayor Toni Pérez to stop looking the other way and take action at the site. “We demand the urgent removal of all the rubbish and intervention by the Social Welfare Department to provide support and housing alternatives for these people in situations of extreme vulnerability,” she stressed.
