Laura Rubio explains that the Civil Guard warned of the danger of fire and soil contamination due to the accumulation of rubbish generated by unauthorized settlements

The organization responsible for protecting nature and environment, (Seprona), detects environmental violations due to waste in El Moralet and Xixo ravine

El Seprona detecta infracciones medioambientales por residuos en El Moralet y barranco de Xixo

The Socialist Municipal Group reported that the Nature Protection Service of the Civil Guard sent a complaint to Benidorm City Council on January 31, stating that environmental violations due to waste are observed in the municipal park of El Moralet and the Xixo ravine.

The socialist councilor who oversees the Environment department, Laura Rubio, explained that Seprona travelled to the city on January 23 to carry out an inspection of the place and a photographic report of the violations detected in the area that are a violation of the current law 7/2022 on Waste and Contaminated Soils. Thus, in the complaint they detail that there are construction sites, shacks, evidence of settlement and constant human activity without authorization and in an unauthorized place, as well as a large amount of waste such as wooden pallets, plastics, iron and aluminum. They also point out that next to one of the shacks there is an abandoned van, which was definitively decommissioned in 2003 according to the DGT, stressing that it should be deposited in a vehicle treatment centre.

The councillor also indicated that, in the letter sent to the Council, Seprona pointed out that the municipal Environment services were informed of the danger of soil contamination and unhealthiness, as well as fire, caused by the accumulation of waste. They were urged to request, through a municipal request, the removal of the waste and cleaning from the owners of the affected plots, as well as the monitoring of waste management, justifying the traceability of the waste.

Rubio criticised Mayor Toni Pérez for allowing this type of unauthorised settlements in this urban park, the so-called new green belt of the city that should be a special protection zone, and that waste continues accumulating. “The Seprona complaint has revealed the negligence and lack of control by the part-time Mayor Toni Pérez. A Mayor more concerned with photos than with managing and caring for his city,” she said.

However, Laura Rubio has called on the mayor to “get to work” as soon as possible to stop the environmental violations detected by the Civil Guard.
