The abstention of PSOE, Liberales and Ciudadanos prevents modification of the General Plan for its application

The opposition repeals the entry into force of the advertising ordinance and the installation of electric stations and gas stations

26 March 2019
La oposición echa al traste la entrada en vigor de la ordenanza de publicidad y la instalación de electrolineras y gasineras

In the plenary session held yesterday, the Councilor for Urban Development, Lourdes Caselles, proposed the specific modification number 20 of the General Urban Plan (PGOU), in its articles 96 and 121.5. This modification was necessary for the implementation of the Outdoor Advertising Ordinance and to allow the installation in the city of the first electroliers and gas stations, service stations for ecological electric or gas vehicles.

The ten votes of the Partido Popular and Ciudadanos government team for Benidorm, plus the two from Compromís-Los Verdes and the non-attached councilor, Juan García, did not reach the absolute majority needed to modify the General Plan since the rest of the councilors ( PSOE, Liberals, Citizens and not assigned Leopoldo Bernabéu), opted for abstention, which has been described today by Caselles as a great "lack of responsibility." These political groups that "fly the environmental banner and sustainable energy" showed yesterday that "words and other things are one thing", lamented the municipal manager of Urbanism today.

The non-approval of the modification of the PGOU, block the regulation "of the entire advertising market" through a municipal ordinance, said Caselles who recalled that in the current advertising landscape "has little to do with what existed in the year 90 when the Plan was approved. " In this sense, the mayor has referred to the electronic screens on public roads or advertising on medians or plots that today "are not legalized." The proposal of modification carried out by Caselles referred to an ordinance "that is already drafted by the municipal technicians" and to which "they have had access", the popular councilor has emphasized, "all the opposition groups and even some have presented allegations and proposals. "

Benidorm, without electric stations

The non-modification of the PGOU also prevents the regulation of the gas stations and gas stations in the municipality, service stations for electric vehicles or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) engines. "With the non-approval of the modification - Caselles has emphasized - what we do is to prevent the citizens of Benidorm from considering the acquisition of this type of vehicle, since they will not have any station that can supply them with gas , nor the electric power ". A "contradiction," Caselles has denounced, "with what the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) proposes, and the breach of European regulations that already govern the liberalization of the sector," the councillor has ruled.
