New signage to welcome visitors to Tossal in La Cala

The City Council of Benidorm has begun to signal the archaeological site of Tossal de la Cala with the aim of making known to neighbors and visitors this important piece of the city's heritage.

The councilor of Historical Heritage, Ana Pellicer, announced this morning that once the first phase of consolidation of the Tossal, "we dressed even more this site with the completion of a mural on one of its walls" with the aim of endowing of "greater visibility" and so that neighbors and visitors "can see the position from the beach". Pellicer recalled that there is still a second phase: "the musealization of our Tossal". For this, "the European Regional Development Fund" (ERDF Funds) is expected.

The new mural shows allegorical motifs that "emulate - pointed out Ana Pellicer - the circular shields, typical of the Iberian Peninsula during the Iberian and Celtiberian periods". Some shields "that welcome" people who come to the excavation. The design is inspired by one of the fragments found in the site where warriors can be seen with their shields, geometric and plant motifs. These supposed soldiers, archaeologists assume, could be part of an Iberian auxiliary army under the command of the Roman garrison officers of the 'Castellum'.

The mayor also announced that in the next few days will be installed "a new signage in which the site will be explained, how the Roman garrison and local residents lived." For the realization of this signaling i>, "has been counted on the help of the images taken with the drone of the Local Police", stressed Pellicer. The person in charge of Historical Heritage has also advanced in that bicycle racks will be placed so that those who go by bike "can still enjoy the site as well as the wonderful views that can be seen in our city."

The direction of the recovery work of the archaeological site of Tossal de la Cala is the responsibility of the University Institute of Research in Archeology and Historical Heritage of the University of Alicante (UA) within a research and development program (R + D + I ) of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.
