Nearly 3,000 club members celebrate the Day of the Mona (Mona Day) at Parc de la Séquia Mare in Benidorm

Nearly 3,000 people gathered this Easter Sunday at the Parc de la Séquia Mare to celebrate one of the most traditional and popular events in Benidorm's festive calendar: the Día de la Mona (Mona Day), organised by the Verge del Sofratge Fiestas Association in collaboration with Benidorm City Council's Fiestas Department.
The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, joined the festival-goers in this celebration, along with the Festival Councilor, Mariló Cebreros, and numerous representatives of the municipal council; the president of the Festival Association, Jonathan López, and his board of directors; the queens of the 2025 Patron Saint Festivals, Paula Pascual Sánchez and Aitana Pérez Gutiérrez, along with their bridesmaids; the president of the Festival Committee, Susana Martínez, and many of the mayors.
The Día de la Mona (Mona Day) kicked off shortly after 8:00 a.m. with the participation of 187 member clubs, and for much of the day, the sun and heat dominated. However, after midday, a heavy downpour forced club members to take shelter, and many of them brought forward the scheduled time to take down tents, tables, and chairs, seeing that the storm wasn't letting up.
Toni Pérez noted that 'La Mona' is a tradition that receives "the support" of the Associació de Penyes (Peñas Association) each year and emphasized the venue that has hosted it for the past four years, the Parc de la Séquia Mare, "an ideal space, as it's practically a forest in the middle of an urban area and allows many people to walk around and enjoy this day without any worries other than having a good time."
After tasting paellas, cured meats, sweet and savoury cakes, and all kinds of food, as is tradition, the Associació de Penyes (Peñas) distributed around 3,200 "monas" (small cakes) among the participants to put the sweetest finishing touch to the celebration.
This year, the Día de la Mona (Mona Day) is, for this festive group, the best appetiser for the traditional Acampada de les Penyes (Camping of the Clubs), another of the most crowded events for the city's peñas (groups), which will take place next weekend on Vía Parque, next to Avenida Juan Pablo II.
