The works, which are 70% completed and will end before summer, will ensure compliance with the discharge limits

The modernization of the WWTP will improve the elimination of pollutants and the plant's energy efficiency

10 December 2021
La modernización de la EDAR mejorará la eliminación de contaminantes y la eficiencia energética de la planta

Investments to improve the Benidorm Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) will allow the Sierra Helada plant to obtain significant energy savings, improve its efficiency in the elimination of polluting waste and comply with the discharge limits that will be imposed by regulations.
Currently, the so-called Improvement number 5 is being carried out, which consists of the modernization of the secondary treatments of the WWTP, with a budget of 1,852,357.77 euros, and whose works are already 70% carried out by the company Aquambiente. This is the most important improvement and modernization action planned for the facility.
This morning a municipal delegation headed by Mayor Toni Pérez paid a visit to the plant to learn more about the details of the infrastructure modernization work.
This improvement of the WWTP is justified "by the need to ensure compliance with the discharge limits that will foreseeably be imposed by the discharge authorization that is being managed at this time, with the highest possible energy efficiency," said Pérez.
To do this, the Purification Station is equipped with smart platforms to control biological processes, the old aeration turbines are replaced by magnetic levitation turbochargers and diffusers, and the decanter bridges of the five clarifiers are also replaced.
The objective, explained the mayor, is "to achieve an adequate elimination of pollutants, including nutrients, with the least possible energy expenditure". And this in order that at Easter, "which will be a litmus test", the improvement is already at 90% of execution and operability "and that in summer it is at 100".
Pérez stressed that with these actions "we are applying technology and achieving energy efficiency while reducing costs and consumption". Energy savings have been estimated at around 30-40%.
The mayor has once again regretted that the regional administration continues without investing in the improvements of the WWTP "despite the fact that it is its competence". Pérez recalled in this regard that "despite the fact that we from Benidorms pay a sanitation fee, the Generalitat does not invest a single cent of a euro in the modernization of this plant, one of the most important in the Valencian Community".
Benidorm WWTP dates from 1984 and needs investment to keep it up-to-date, but "the reality is that Benidorm is promoting it, paying the sanitation fee and also providing service to surrounding municipalities", the mayor concluded.
