Minute of silence in Benidorm for the woman murdered in Navarra

25 August 2021
Minuto de silencio en Benidorm por la mujer asesinada en Navarra

This noon, Benidorm City Council has observed a minute of silence at the doors of the town hall, after confirming the Government Delegation against Gender Violence the murder of a woman on July 7 in Murchante (Navarra). The municipal corporation, headed by the mayor, Toni Pérez, and the Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, has wanted to show in this way its strongest rejection of this social scourge.
The victim was 43 years old and there were no previous complaints of gender violence against the aggressor, ex-partner and 41-year-old ex-brother-in-law, who allegedly rammed the car in which she was travelling and later wounded her to death with a knife in the presence of her children of 9 and 5 years old. The woman also had two older children.
With this, 33 women have been murdered so far in 2021; 1,111 since the data began to be computed in 2003. Likewise, gender violence throws the figure of 16 underage orphans this year; 320 since 2013.
The Department of Equality insists once again that any woman who feels threatened has the right to be assisted by the specialized staff of the City Council. Likewise, it reiterates the advisability, in the event of any possible case of gender violence, of using the free telephone number 016. It is available in 52 languages 365 days a year and leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from the registry of the telephone.
