Manifesto on Gambo Street on the occasion of 'World AIDS Day' to claim more prevention and not trivialize HIV

01 December 2018
Manifiesto en la Calle Gambo con motivo del ‘Día Mundial del SIDA’ para reivindicar más prevención y no banalizar el VIH

The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, Senator Agustín Almodóbar and several councilors of the municipal corporation accompanied the members of the 'AMIGOS de ayuda en VIH-SIDA' association, reading the manifesto of 'World AIDS Day 'by its president, Arnulfo González, who has called for' to continue working on prevention 'and to avoid the' trivialization of the disease ', as it still has no cure.

A memorial with the symbolic lighting of candles in memory of the people who have suffered and are suffering from the disease, under the motto 'We are all for life', was held at 5.30 pm in Gambo Street.

Arnulfo González reminded the attendees that Amigos Benidorm Association, founded 37 years ago, was a pioneer in Spain in the creation of NGOs to support this disease, as well as hosted the first national meeting of these organizations in 1996, precisely the year in which appeared the first medications capable of treating the virus.

According to Arnulfo González, "the fact that the treatments work does not mean that the disease has a cure, and many people think so." Gonzalez explained that this has caused a certain "trivialization" of the disease and "the guard has been lowered in prevention, so  last year have increased the new cases of AIDS."
