01 June 2017

One side and 25,000 diptychs will inform on the measures to be taken to prevent their proliferation

Benidorm City Council and the drinking water concessionaire, Hidraqua, repeat last year's successful experience and will distribute a leaflet with information to prevent the presence and proliferation of the tiger mosquito (Aedes Albopictus) in the population. This was announced this morning by the Health Councilor, Ana Pellicer, before the media that was also attended by the manager of the company, Javier Díez, and the head of the department of Health and municipal doctor, Francisco Pérez Candel.

Ana Pellicer recalled that "90% of the outbreaks are at home" and that, despite the fact that the City Council acts "in each and every one of the public spaces" it is in households where they should take "small measures "that in the end will be" great measures to avoid the proliferation of this mosquito ". Basically, the mayor has insisted on the need to avoid "small amounts of water in the pots" because these are the "most attractive" places for the mosquito when laying eggs.

The head of the area of Health has also said that the City Council promulgate a side that will be displayed in municipal buildings where it will be specified what citizens should do to avoid the proliferation of this Diptera.

Francisco Pérez Candel has emphasized that the tiger mosquito "is an invasive species that comes from Southeast Asia and that by the climatic changes and the increase of the globalization has been extended", specializing in developing its life cycle "in very small amounts of water". This animal is responsible for the proliferation of diseases such as chikungunya, dengue, or zika, "although fortunately," said Pérez Candel, "in the Region of Valencia has not been detected any autochthonous case."

The doctor has insisted that "the City Council is taking measures to control the tiger mosquito population" in the municipality "and you know" that in the other municipalities of the region, too. "If we did not work together, it would not be effective," he said.

For his part, Javier Díez has insisted on the success of the 2016 initiative and the importance of reissuing it this year. "This type of campaign," he emphasized, "is raising people's awareness of the potential danger that may come to represent [the mosquito] and is a way of making a city that fits perfectly into our social strategy."
