The Councilor for Commerce, Javier Jordá, points out that it will be carried out "attending and listening to all the parties involved"

Benidorm will review and update the municipal ordinance on the occupation of tables and chairs about public roads

18 July 2023
Consejo Vecinal

Benidorm City Council will review and update municipal ordinance number 2 on the uses of public use areas, in relation to the occupation of tables and chairs on public roads, according to what has been advanced today by the mayor of the city, Toni Pérez, during the course of the Neighborhood Council meeting held today.

The mayor indicated that the Department of Commerce "is already working on the matter" and recognized that "a conciliation is necessary, which is complex", but affirmed that "we will provide a solution that will attend to all interests". Pérez is in favor of addressing the issue "in the entire Benidorm term, but it must be done street by street."

In this sense, the Councilor for Commerce, Javier Jordá, indicated that the update of the ordinance "will be done taking into account and listening to the opinion of all parties, and for that we are already meeting with all the representatives of the hospitality sector and restoration” through the creation of a work table with the agents involved.

Jordá considers that the current ordinance "is outdated" and that "it is necessary to carry out an in-depth analysis and update it, and we are going to do it". In addition, he has stressed that it is not just about one area of Benidorm, but that it affects the entire city.

"It is clear that once the pandemic has passed, for which a series of extraordinary measures were adopted, now a review must be undertaken and the ordinance adapted to current circumstances" stressed the mayor, who has revealed that he has already had the first contacts with the associations involved and that it will continue to hold successive meetings "to address proposals and solutions".

On the other hand, today's Neighborhood Council also addressed the request for the installation of surveillance cameras in Parque de l'Aigüera or a greater police presence. At this point, the mayor indicated that the facility has "a special security device", but stressed that surveillance cameras cannot be installed "because it is impossible by law, the law does not allow surveillance cameras to be placed in public spaces." He himself is in favor of increasing security measures "and monitoring uncivil acts" in reference to the behavior of some neighbors and their pets. "But the sanction can only be imposed when it is detected," he insisted.

He also indicated that the greater police presence requested by the Council "is a matter of resources, although we will transfer it to Headquarters to reinforce the police presence to the extent possible."

In the same appointment, Pérez transferred to the residents the "absolute provision" of the City Council for the use of the road worker's house as a social center, although he has made it clear that "it cannot be for exclusive use." The mayor advanced that "there will be joint programming with the associations and its own", but has warned that "the space gives for what it gives" in reference to the fact that it is small to accommodate large events.

Regarding the remodeling of Santander Street and its adjacent streets, which the residents of La Cala have raised, especially to have a greater rotation of parking spaces, Toni Pérez explained that said remodeling "cannot be understood as an isolated action". and that it should be contemplated within an intervention that would affect the avenues of Villajoyosa and Vicente Llorca Alós.
