The project, with a budget of 615,222 euros, will be approved by the next Local Government Board
Benidorm will install a photovoltaic system in the Poniente park-and-ride parking lot to improve the City Hall's energy efficiency

Benidorm City Council will approve, through the Local Government Board, the project for the installation of solar photovoltaic panels for collective self-consumption on roofs in the Poniente park-and-ride parking lot, at the intersection of Puerto Rico and República Argentina avenues. This project falls under Action 4 of the 2023 Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan, "Verde Benidorm," and its execution will be financed with Next Generation funds under the aforementioned PSTD 2023.
The council obtained a grant for this project under the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, funded by the European Union-Next Generation, Recovery and Resilience Facility, component 14, investment 1, submeasure 2 of the PRTR, in the extraordinary call for 2023. The project will be approved next Monday, and the budget amounts to €615,222.30.
The project, according to Councillor for Urban Scene, Francis Muñoz, proposes "the installation of canopies over the existing open-air parking lot in the new PP21 'Poniente' development to implement a 303.3 KW photovoltaic system for shared self-consumption, with surplus energy compensated through the public grid." The entire photovoltaic installation will be located on the roofs of canopies and buildings, the project indicates.
624 photovoltaic panels with a unit power of 540 watts peak (Wp) will be installed. The installation will consist of four independent installations and will generate a total of approximately 462,840 kWh of energy per year. This would represent a reduction in CO2 emissions of 214.52 tons.
The future canopies will be constructed of hot-dip galvanised steel with a pre-coated sheet steel roof on the upper side. They have been designed to withstand wind loads exceeding 130 km/h. The project is expected to cover a minimum of 165 parking spaces. Taking into account the dimensions of each space, the total surface area of the canopies will cover almost 1,900 square meters. The completion date for this work is four months, according to the project.
Francis Muñoz stated that the presented project "improves the energy efficiency of Benidorm City Hall, increasing savings in electricity consumption while achieving a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of all municipal buildings."
