Benidorm will host the Spanish Petanque Club Championship in Foietes Park

21 May 2024
Benidorm albergará el Campeonato de España de Clubs de Petanca en el Parque de Foietes

Benidorm Foietes Park will host the next two weekends of the Spanish Petanque Club Championship organized by the Spanish Federation of this sport. The event was presented this morning at the Town Hall by the Councilor for Sports, Javier Jordá, who was accompanied by the president of the Valencian Petanque Federation, José Quilez, and the president of the Benidorm Beach Petanque Club, Gabriel Campos.

On the first weekend, from May 24 to 26, the Senior Triplets competition of the first and second men's categories and the Copa del Rey will be held. In this case, there will be 256 athletes from 64 teams -32 in each category- from all over the national territory after being the best in their cities and qualifying for this Spanish Championship.

The following weekend, from May 31 to June 2, will be the turn of the Spanish championships in the women's and youth categories. The 32 best teams from all over Spain will participate in both categories, which means 128 senior women and 128 youth. The Queen's Cup will also be played.

Javier Jordá highlighted in the presentation that the Foietes park “will be a magnificent setting to host this great competition” and has encouraged fans and those who are not “to come these weekends to witness the championships of a sport.” very followed in Spain.” The mayor has announced that there will be “a great sporting and festive atmosphere” thanks to the installation of 32 courts on the park esplanade.

José Quilez, president of the Valencian Federation, thanked the City Council and the Provincial Council for the support and pointed out that "it will be the best championship in Spain of those held so far." Furthermore, Quilez has highlighted that there will be “around 2,000 people, including athletes and companions, who will pass through the Foietes facilities every weekend.”

Finally, the president of the federation wanted to dispel the belief that petanque is a sport for older people. “It is not entirely true because there are more and more young people who play and become interested in this sport and there will be an opportunity to verify this with the participants in these championships,” he indicated.
