The figures are at very similar levels to those of 2018 and 2019, two very positive years in terms of tourism

Benidorm registers the best month of April in unemployment data since 2008

25 May 2022
Empleo.

Benidorm has sealed the best month of April in terms of unemployment in the last 14 years. This is clear from the statistics collected and published by LABORA, which indicate that last month the city closed with 4,803 unemployed people, the lowest figure in April since 2008 when the number of unemployed was recorded at 3,578. Unemployment data, that of April 2022, which is even below those registered in 2018 and 2019 (with 4,937 and 4,842 unemployed people respectively), two years that "were very good touristically speaking and, consequently, very positive for the labour market and economic activity.

The mayor, Toni Pérez, has indicated that "we are moderately satisfied and optimistic about the future due to these figures", which "confirm that, after two hard years marked by the health crisis and its consequences, Benidorm is in clear recovery and a sustained economic recovery is taking place”. In fact, "since the beginning of the year the number of unemployed has been reduced by 1,673 people and in April alone, coinciding with the first major tourist event of the year, 696 people left the unemployment list".

According to the data provided by the mayor, “the decrease in the number of unemployed during April is even more significant if we compare it with the same period in 2021, in which a record number of unemployed was reached above 8,800 persons". "Everything indicates that fortunately, this fateful situation is behind us and that we can face the future with greater and better guarantees, with a very favourable perspective of creating and maintaining employment", he added.

Toni Pérez has acknowledged that “from the very moment the pandemic broke out, unemployment has been one of the main concerns of the local government, which at all times has dealt with this issue by working fundamentally along two lines, convinced that the best policy social support for families that could be deployed was the creation of employment”. On the one hand, he has specified, “as many employment programs as possible have been developed”; and on the other, "there has been an attempt to promote the necessary conditions to reactivate hiring by injecting economic resources into the productive fabric."

Thus, the mayor has referred to “the great employment plan deployed at the end of 2021 and still in execution with which the City Council hired 130 people for one year through the ECOVID and EMPUJU programs, to the similar plans developed in 2020”. He has also mentioned, "the initiatives promoted by the City Council to inject economy into companies, SMEs and the self-employed, either through direct aid, bonuses or consumer activation campaigns".

Toni Pérez has highlighted that the reactivation of the labour market is making itself felt "in the private sector", fundamentally "with the tourist activity" that "is once again a tractor and locomotive for the generation of employment, not only in Benidorm but also in throughout the region, the Community and Spain”.
