The facilities host an exhibition with material from Edelmiro Trillo's collection

Benidorm library remembers the 150 years of the first Spanish postcard

04 December 2023
La biblioteca de Benidorm recuerda los 150 años de la primera postal española

December marks 150 years since the first postcard was published in Spain. It was a means of communication that disseminated the image and captured significant moments and places. To commemorate this anniversary, the Department of Historical and Cultural Heritage headed by Ana Pellicer has organized the exhibition 'Mundopostal: 150 years of the first Spanish postcard' in the hall of the Central Library.

Beyond recovering this milestone, "the exhibition serves to publicize and highlight material that is part of our municipal heritage, in this case, Edelmiro Trillo's collection donated by his family to the City Council." The exhibition, which can now be seen in the library hall, is made up of a selection of “almost 2,700 cards from Trillo's collection, among which there are postcards from different countries, such as Spain, France, Germany, Morocco or Sri Lanka dated between 1893 and 1970.”

Pellicer has pointed out that this exhibition “takes us on a fascinating journey through time, in which we can see the evolution of these small works of art and their cultural importance.” Thus, the viewer "will appreciate the diversity of artistic styles that have left a mark on the visual history of Spain and the transition from black and white to the colourful four-colour paintings of the mid-20th century."

In addition, the exhibition has explanatory panels to learn about some anecdotal data about this postal system, such as the secret language of the stamps or the military use of the card. The exhibition can be visited until March 1.
