Benidorm expresses its condemnation and rejection of the latest sexist crime committed in Amposta (Tarragona)

03 April 2024
Minuto de silencio en el Ayuntamiento de Benidorm.

Benidorm City Council showed this Wednesday its rejection and condemnation of the latest crime of sexist violence confirmed in the last few hours in our country by the Government Delegation against Gender Violence. This is a 34-year-old woman murdered in Amposta (Tarragona), at the hands of her ex-partner.

The silent rally to express rejection of this new crime occurred in the Town Hall square. It was led by the first deputy mayor, Ana Pellicer, the mayor of Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, and members of the municipal corporation.

The victim, Thais, was 34 years old and a mother of two children. She was murdered several days ago by her ex-partner, 47 years old, who had a history of gender violence and who dismembered the woman's body after committing the murder. The detainee confessed the crime to a friend, who was the one who notified the Local Police, who arrested him after a search of the town. The perpetrator of the crime is a violent person who had previously attacked the victim and who ignored the restraining order against him.

With this new victim, the number of women murdered so far this year now amounts to eight, while since 2003, when the count began, there are already 1,248 women who have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners, as a consequence of gender violence.

The Department of Equality recalls that Benidorm City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from the mobile call log.
