Equality department recalls the 016 telephone service for victims, which is available in 52 languages

Benidorm condemns the latest case of gender violence, the murder of a woman in Orihuela

28 March 2023
Minuto de silencio

Benidorm City Council has condemned today the last case of gender violence registered in Spain and that brings to 11 the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners so far this year, and 1,195 since 2003, the year in which they began to be counted. the victims. The first deputy mayor, Ana Pellicer, has led the silent rally that has been held at Plaza SSMM Reyes de España to condemn this new crime and remember the victim, a 63-year-old woman from Orihuela in Alicante.

This last case confirmed by the Government Delegation against gender violence occurred last Sunday morning in Orihuela Costa. Around 4:00 a.m., the Civil Guard, alerted by the neighbors, went to the home that a British couple shared in this residential area. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found the woman lifeless. Her partner, a 69-year-old man, had ended her life.

The man appeared in the Viogen database for a case that the Civil Guard itself opened ex officio in 2019 and that became inactive the following year when the complaint was not confirmed.

The Department of Equality recalls that the City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates once again that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to remove it from the mobile phone call log. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and in 52 languages.
