The action aims to expand shaded areas and increase the town's tree heritage

Benidorm begins planting 200 new trees in several parks and urban streets

Benidorm inicia la plantación de 200 ejemplares de árboles nuevos en varios parques y vías urbanas

Benidorm City Council, through the Department of Parks and Gardens, is planting 200 specimens of various species of new trees in different parts of the city to increase the shaded areas and expand the vegetation where it is considered necessary. The project involves an investment of 50,000 euros.

José Ramón González de Zárate, Councillor for Parks and Gardens, today has visited some of the points where work has been carried out and has pointed out that the objective is “the improvement of the urban visual environment of some parks, streets and avenues by planting specimens that provide shade in those areas that are planted, as well as achieving an improvement in the aesthetic landscape of the city”. The councillor has emphasised that one of the priorities of the government has been for years “to intensify the presence of leafy trees” to mitigate the heat in the summer months, “as well as to increase the tree heritage of Benidorm”.

The plantation will be finished next month and the investment has been made from the treasury surplus. The contract included, in addition to the plantation, the installation of the drip irrigation system. Thus, the drinking water pipeline will be used, to which the system will be connected, and from it, the network of secondary pipes will start to carry out correct irrigation. The irrigation time will be monitored to avoid wetting the sidewalks to disturb pedestrians and users of urban parks as little as possible.

The trees chosen for this action are: White Tipa (Tipuana tipu), Cinnamon (Melia azedarach), Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia), Japanese Ligustrum (Ligustrum japonica), Chinese Soap Tree (Koleuteria paniculata), Red Callistemun (Callistem spaciosus), Australian Oak (Grevillea robusta), White Poplar (Populus alba) and Indian Lilac (Lagerstroemia indica).

González de Zárate has highlighted that in the last eight years, “more than 5,000 trees have been planted in the city” and announced that “we will continue to do so where needed, as demonstrated by this new intervention”. These new specimens are being placed in places such as Avenida 9 de Octubre, the urban park of Rincón de Loix, the Sèquia Mare, Foietes, Avenida Alcalde Vicente Pérez Devesa, flower beds in Tomás Ortuño Street, Ermita de Sanz and Salt de l’Aigua dissuasive car park, however, trees could be planted in some more places “according to technical criteria”.
