Benidorm begins the geotechnical study for the 2nd phase of Mediterráneo Avenue car park and will determine whether an underground car park is viable

The geotechnical study commissioned by Benidorm City Council to address the second phase of the renovation of Mediterráneo Avenue, in the section between Europa and Ametlla del Mar, is already underway. A study that the City Council has commissioned to the concessionaire company of the municipal drinking water and sewerage service, Hidraqua, and that, among other things, will determine whether it is feasible to include the construction of an underground car park in the project.
As the mayor, Toni Pérez, already announced at the time, this study is “totally necessary before the drafting of the project” for the remodelling of the avenue “given the importance and size of the hydraulic infrastructures included in this section, approximately 1,200 metres long”. Thus, when planning the second phase of the renovation of the avenue, “we need to explore the capacity of the subsoil from a geotechnical point of view” to “know how it should be designed” and also to “see if it is possible” to include complementary underground infrastructures in the project, such as a storm tank or a car park.
According to the information provided today by the Councillor for Water Cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate, a specialised team is already carrying out the first planned tests at 14 different points along the avenue. Among other parameters, these tests will determine the foundation level and the water table, two key issues to establish the viability of the underground car park.
In this regard, De Zárate has detailed that the study of the car park will focus on the section of Mediterráneo “that goes from Avenida de Europa to Filipinas”, since it is precisely at this last point “that we find the underground channelling of the Derramador ravine”.
The geotechnical study costs around 29,000 euros. With the data it provides, "we will be in a position to carry out the execution project for the second phase of Mediterráneo Avenue," which covers the area from the junction with Europa Avenue to Ametlla del Mar Avenue.
