The new lighting will also reduce CO2 emissions by almost 9,000 kilos per year, will involve an investment of just over 150,000 euros and will be fully operational in 5 months
Benidorm awards the contract for the renovation of the lighting on the Castell cliff, which will reduce consumption by more than 80%
The Local Governing Board of Benidorm City Council has awarded the contract for the renovation of the ornamental lighting on the Castell cliff, which “will reduce energy consumption and costs by more than 80%.” This was announced today by Mayor Toni Pérez, who emphasised that “this new lighting, in addition to being more energy-efficient, also allows for remote management, adjusting to the lighting needs at any given time, respecting the marine environment without detracting in any way from the monumental character of such an iconic and emblematic location in the city.”
The contract was awarded for €150,630.45 to Sociedad Ibérica de Construcciones Eléctrica (SICE), the sole bidder, which offered an improvement by providing more LED units than those specified in the tender documents. According to the mayor, “this energy efficiency project, which will be completed within a maximum of five months, aligns with the objectives of sustainability, green transition, and improvement of the urban space; and is financed with European Next Generation EU funds, within the framework of the 2022 Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan ‘Benidorm Vision 360’, specifically included in Action 12: Beautification of the Old Town.”
Toni Pérez explained that “after so much time in service, it was necessary to update this ornamental lighting, for reasons of environmental and economic sustainability, as well as for operational efficiency and image, since some light points are out of service, especially on the side facing Levante Beach.” In addition to replacing the existing light points on both sides of Punta Canfali, the project includes the installation of new additional luminaires, which “will not project directly towards the sea or the sky” to “avoid light pollution.”
As the mayor highlighted, the project “also improves the quality of the lighting, enhances the nighttime appeal of the Castell cliff, and strengthens the tourist and scenic attraction of Punta Canfali and its cliffs, contributing to a more sustainable destination model.”
Finally, Toni Pérez emphasised the economic and energy savings that “we will achieve with this project, with percentages exceeding 80%.” Thus, consumption will drop from the current 10 kWh per year to 1.84 kWh, and the bill will be reduced from approximately €8,700 annually to just over €1,500. Also significant is the reduction in CO2 emissions, estimated at 8,982 fewer kilograms released into the atmosphere each year.
