This second phase of the project, co-financed with European funds, 3,512 light points will be implemented with 'led' technology that will save up to 79%

Benidorm awards for 2.5 million the renovation of Levante lighting, within the Energy Efficiency program

18 August 2022
Benidorm adjudica por 2,5 millones la renovación del alumbrado de Levante, dentro del programa de Eficiencia Energética

Benidorm City Council has already awarded the second phase of the Energy Efficiency Project for an amount of 2,527,730.45 euros, according to what appears on the State Contracting Platform. This phase corresponds to the renewal of lighting in the Levante area and the intervention will act on 3,512 light points and 55 control centres, which means renewing 43.85% of the 7,660 light points that exist in the area. This will allow the installed power to be reduced from 759.59 kW to 195.01 kW.

The award, like the first phase, has fallen to the company Sociedad Ibérica de Construcciones Eléctricas S.A. (SICE), which also offered a 43.4% discount rate and undertook to install a hundred hybrid photovoltaic lighting points.

The action is 50% financed with European funds through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), and the programme, once completed, will reach all the city's neighbourhoods.

The estimated energy savings, according to Mayor Toni Pérez, "reaches up to 79%". Pérez has advanced that the lights “will also have a remote management system to change the intensity and power of the lights when necessary”.

The mayor has also stressed that "all the wiring will be new", in addition to showing his "absolute" willingness to allow residents to express all their demands in terms of lighting "because they are the ones who know the place best".

Toni Pérez has referred to the Energy Efficiency project and has stated that "it is very ambitious and is going to make Benidorm a more sustainable city and destination". In addition, he has added that with it "we follow the 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and working side by side with municipal technicians so that this important political vocation translates into realities for the people of Benidorm".

Pérez has insisted that long before the government implemented the energy saving plan “we had already started this commitment to energy efficiency. Since 2015, we have implemented savings and renovation policies that have given us magnificent results, as evidenced by the continuous reduction in energy and electricity costs over these years, despite the brutal increase in cost.”

In addition, he has underlined that with the IDAE "we reach all the neighbourhoods of the city and we do it with innovation, technology and avant-garde lighting, with less light pollution and lower cost".

As for the first phase of the project, awarded for just over two million, which covered the downtown area of Benidorm, which included the historic centre, its expansion and the neighbourhoods of Foietes-Colonia Madrid and Imalsa-Els Tolls , as of today, 2,379 luminaires have already been installed, with which the degree of execution over what was foreseen in the contract is 96%. Counting the improvements offered, the degree of execution of the total project is 87%.

Thus, 67% of the columns provided for in the improvements and 95% of the planned arms have already been installed. Likewise, 1,827 Telemanagement modules have been installed, which are in operation or in the adjustment phase, and 13 point-to-point Telemanagement systems installed on switchboards. All this represents around 60% of the amount allocated for the improvements.

Project details

The project is acting on 7,808 points of light out of the 14,343 in the municipality, 54.44% of municipal lighting, and will reach all neighbourhoods. Throughout the project, action will be taken on the first line of Levante and Poniente, in the Ensanche de Levante, Colonia Madrid, Casco Antiguo, Centro area, Calvari, La Cala, Els Tolls, Rincón de Loix, the main accesses to the city, Salt de l'Aigua, Alfredo Corral, surroundings of Vía Parque, Finca Barrina, Mercasa, Ciudad Deportiva Guillermo Amor and Parque de l'Aigüera, among others.
