Benidorm approves the project to expand ‘Sant Jaume’ cemetery

24 March 2021
Benidorm aprova el projecte d'ampliació del cementeri de Sant Jaume...

The Local Government Board (JGL) will approve next week the urbanization project of the Special Expansion Plan of Sant Jaume Cemetery in Marxassos area, with which the space of the cemetery will be doubled. This approval occurs after the City Council has resolved the two allegations submitted to the project during the public exhibition period, thus giving free rein to the drafting of the bidding documents for the works.

Some works that "have a multiannual character and with which we ensure burial capacity for the coming decades", as pointed out by the mayor, Toni Pérez, who has indicated that "once the expansion at the infrastructure level is completed, predictably in In 2023, the cemetery will go from the current 41,780 square meters to 91,248, multiplying the current capacity by more than two ”.

This expansion will be carried out on municipal land located to the north of the current cemetery, and will have "all the services and infrastructures necessary for a modern cemetery, and with which we anticipate the needs of the city, which will be covered for decades."

The project that will be approved on Monday, at the proposal of the Councilor for Urbanism, Lourdes Caselles, includes a large parking space for the reception of visitors, converts the current access road into a central lane with a single platform and provides spaces for "all burial modalities. In addition, a plot is reserved for the construction of the future funeral home in Benidorm.

Toni Pérez has advanced that "until this expansion is materialized, the City Council will continue to allocate the resources that are necessary to, if necessary, build new blocks in the current facilities, as we have been doing in recent years" . In this regard, the Councilor for Cemeteries, Angela Llorca, recalled that "since December 2015 until now, 520 burial units have been built, using the most of the unoccupied space of the current cemetery."
