The test, non-stop and solo, will take place in September next year and will cover a distance of 83 nautical miles

Anémona announces a new challenge that will unite Benidorm with Ibiza in windsurfing to raise funds against breast cancer

30 July 2024
Anémona anuncia un nuevo reto que unirá Benidorm con Ibiza en windsurf para recaudar fondos contra el cáncer de mama

The Self-Help Group for Women with Breast Cancer of the Marina Baixa, Anémona, will undertake a new challenge to raise funds for research in the fight against this disease. In this case, the challenge will be led by Darío Quesada, a windsurfer from the Benidorm Nautical Club, who will make a crossing to link Benidorm with San Antonio (Ibiza) without stops, alone, and pass through Calpe, where a marking buoy will be placed.

The initiative presented this morning at the City Hall by the Councillors for Equality and Sports, Ángela Zaragozí and Javier Jordá, will take place in September 2025. However, the specific date will be determined days before depending on the wind forecasts, a fundamental and decisive element in tests of this type. It is called 'Windsurfer against Cancer' and will cover the 83 nautical miles that separate both points.

Quesada explained that this is a challenge “that he wanted to do 40 years ago” but has decided to do it now “to help Anémona”. All the money raised will be used by the association to fight breast cancer. “Anyone who wants to help can do so in any of the Anémona accounts, indicating in the concept that it is for Darío Quesada's journey” explained Quesada.

The sailor pointed out concerning the initiative that “it can take me 6 or 16 hours, depending on the wind, which can make me go in a straight line or that I have to deviate and do many more kilometres”. Quesada will be accompanied by two boats. One of them will be the director of the event, Fernando Pardo, and the other the medical and health team to guarantee his safety.
Darío Quesada will use a smaller-than-usual sail, windsurfer class, “which is not for competition”. He will, however, carry two more different candles “in case a storm comes”.

The councillor for Equality has highlighted “this new challenge of Anémona, which does not stop and always has people willing to collaborate with them”. Javier Jordá, councillor for Sports, has also encouraged “to take up this challenge and thank those who have collaborated with the initiative”.
