What is a low-emission zone and how does it affect me?

A Low Emission Zone is an area delimited by the City Council to regulate the access, circulation and parking of vehicles to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The aim is to create healthier and safer spaces.

What is the Benidorm LEZ like?

Vehicle access control was already implemented years ago in Benidorm. With the Low Emission Zone, we improve the control of the most polluting vehicles, reduce noise, make traffic flow more fluid and regulate tourist traffic.

Where exactly will this Low Emission Zone be located?

Benidorm Low Emission Zone occupies an area of approximately 74 hectares and is divided into three sub-zones, which are the areas with the highest pedestrian traffic in the city:

The Centre of Benidorm, which is the Old Town and the Down Town (35 hectares).

The Levante area (31 Hectares).

 Paseo de Poniente (8 Hectares).

When will the Low Emission Zone be operational?

Starting on January 1, 2025, the implementation tests of the LEZ began a period that will be flexible and will last for 6 months.

Will public transport be improved as a result of the Low Emission Zone?

Yes, the work of improving the public transport network in a continuous area is being carried out by the City Council.

How will access to the LEZ  be controlled?

Access will be controlled through cameras distributed in different areas that register the license plates of vehicles allowed to access.

It has 11 access points 8 exit points and 5 entry and exit points.

In addition, these cameras will not only be used for control but can also protect or serve as evidence in case of any problem.

What vehicles will be able to access the interior of the Low Emission Zones?

All vehicles of residents of the Low Emission Zone, urban transport and vehicles with special authorization will be able to access.

But if I live within the marked areas, and my vehicle does not have an environmental label, will I be able to circulate?

In the case of having a vehicle without an environmental label and residing or being registered within the Low Emission Zone, it is possible to access. They will be granted an annual moratorium that can be renewed at the City Hall.

What label should my car have in this situation?

The General Directorate of Traffic in 2016 classified cars according to their degree of pollution. To find out which label corresponds to your car, you must visit the DGT website (https://www.dgt.es/nuestros-servicios/tu-vehiculo/tus-vehiculos/distint…)

Where can I purchase the low-emission label?

There are different places where you can purchase the corresponding labels. At the Post Office or through their website for €5.

Garages can also offer their customers the environmental label.

What other exceptions does Benidorm Low Emission Zone have?

It also contemplates the regulation of exceptions to allow temporary and/or punctual access, processing the corresponding application. This authorization will be carried out simply through an application. All exceptions will be explained on the Benidorm City Council website.

And what about historic cars?

They are governed by the same rules as vehicles that do not have an environmental label. They can circulate with automatic access (with an annual moratorium) in case they are registered or resident in the LEZ, public service vehicles or vehicles with a card for people with reduced mobility (VPMR).

What is the situation for foreign vehicles?

The regulations are the same and, if they do not comply with them, they are not allowed to access.

How can I find out what label corresponds to my vehicle?

By consulting the General Directorate of Traffic website you can find out the environmental label of a vehicle.

Is it mandatory to carry the environmental label on the vehicle?

It is recommended to place the sticker on your vehicle, although at the moment it is not mandatory, it may be if established by the DGT.

How will permits be requested?
