The mayor has collected the award linked to the Red.es project, in the category of 'Smart Territories and Tourism'
The project 'Benidorm, Smart and Sustainable Tourist Destination', winner of the 'enerTIC Awards'
The project 'Benidorm, Smart and Sustainable Tourist Destination', promoted by the City Council and financed with FEDER funds through the Red.es entity, has been awarded today at the 'enerTIC Awards'; awards given annually by the platform to distinguish success stories and good practices linked to digitalization to improve energy efficiency and sustainability.
The mayor, Toni Pérez, today collected this award in the 'Smart Territories and Tourism' category at a gala held in Madrid, which was also attended by the Councilor for Innovation, Aída García Mayor. After collecting the award, which he assured is “an incentive to continue working,” the mayor explained that the award-winning project “fits perfectly with the strategy we set in the fall of 2015 to transform the city and address the conversion into a Smart Tourist Destination (SIT)”.
Likewise, he pointed out that in this project "Benidorm has had prominent partners such as Telefónica and Red.es", and recalled that it includes "17 actions around four axes: smart management of the destination, sustainability and energy efficiency, smart beaches and satisfaction of the tourist and the resident.”
As a “great leader in tourism”, he stated, for Benidorm “managing all this demand intelligently is an obligation”, as is “promoting and developing projects that have “environmental, economic and social sustainability” as their central axis.
The 'Smart Territories and Tourism' category, 'Benidorm, Smart and Sustainable Tourist Destination' competed with projects from the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council and the University of Alcalá. In 2019, the DTI Smart Office of Benidorm was already recognized in these awards in the 'eGovernment' category and was a finalist in the same category in which Red.es' Benidorm project has now won and in the 'Local Public Administrations' category.
Project details
The main objective of the Benidorm project linked to Red.es is to “improve the economic, social and environmental quality of life of Benidorm tourists, as well as its residents and companies, advancing to this end the deployment of the DTI platform.
The 17 actions proposed and in development can be replicated in other tourist destinations, especially sun and beach destinations with a strong weight in the international market. Among the actions of 'Benidorm, Smart and Sustainable Tourist Destination' there are solutions to advance the concept of smart and sustainable beaches such as those that allow measuring the influx of bathers, offering digital information on screens and controlling water quality with smart buoys.
The project includes other components such as weather stations, environmental sensorization, control of vehicle capacity and discharges, or monitoring of water consumption.
