The improvements of the specifications and those proposed by the concessionaire will allow to increase the quality of the purified water to enhance its use in agriculture

The new contract of the WWTP will involve an investment of 4 million euros to improve the treatment system

24 December 2018
El nuevo contrato de la EDAR comportará una inversión de 4 millones de euros para mejorar el sistema de depuración

The new contract for the operation and maintenance service of the sanitation and treatment system in Benidorm will involve an investment of just over 4 million euros in improvements and updating of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and the entire pumping network . This contract, approved in full at the end of November, was signed on December 18 and has a validity of four years, with the possibility of extension for two others.

Based on the offer presented by the contractor, Aquambiente, the company will invest 1,002,606.11 euros each year to improve the treatment and sanitation facilities, "which will undoubtedly improve the use and reuse of water resources, making our integrated water management system even more efficient, which is one of the most efficient in the world ", explained the mayor, Toni Pérez.

The mayor has indicated that "the municipal technicians have been very demanding when marking the improvements for the provision of the service in the new contract, with a view to reducing to the minimum expression the losses of water, to increase the quality of the reused water to enhance its use in agriculture, as the possible incidents that may occur do not affect the normal operation of the service, something fundamental in any municipality and more if possible in a tourist city like Benidorm. "

Among the improvements that will be undertaken during the term of the contract is "the adequacy and renewal of the electromechanical equipment of pumping stations and the purification plant itself", including the installation of new pumps and the replacement of equipment that are obsolete by others that increase performance and reduce energy consumption.

In addition, measures are planned to reduce conductivity, thus favoring the reuse of treated water for agriculture. The humid chamber of the pumping station of Plaza de la Hispanidad will also be modified to reduce the accumulation of wipes and other waste. "With this measure, Benidorm becomes one of the pioneer municipalities when implementing measures that address the serious effects caused to the operation of the sanitation and purification system the proliferation of this type of waste," said Pérez, who has I appealed to the public so that the toilets are not used to dispose of these wipes.

Another of the improvements proposed is the implementation of an intelligent control platform for aeration processes, replacing the current procedure with a more advanced one. This technological change will increase energy efficiency and reduce losses.

Likewise, Aquambiente has proposed improvements focused on increasing sustainability and linked to tourism intelligence and the 'Smart City', such as the use of photovoltaic energy for the loading of vehicles; the implantation of a plant for the production of biomethane - taking advantage of the biogas generated in the treatment of sludge - that can be used by service vehicles; or the installation of a meteorological station in the WWTP whose data can be integrated in any technological environment.
