Benidorm also asks the Ministry to expand the collector on Avenida Armada Española, “which is not in a condition to receive new contributions of water”

EPSAR will renew the pumping line towards Benidorm from Cala de Finestrat pumping station to reduce discharges into the public domain

04 September 2024
La EPSAR renovará la línea de impulsión hacia Benidorm de la estación de bombeo de la Cala de Finestrat para reducir vertidos al dominio público

The Public Water Sanitation Entity (EPSAR) will renovate the pumping line to the Benidorm system from the Cala de Finestrat pumping station. This is a work that has been authorized today by the Local Government Board of the Benidorm City Council whose objective is to reduce the discharges into the public hydraulic domain in the La Vila Joiosa sanitation system.

On July 11, EPSAR itself requested authorization from the City Council to proceed with the occupation of the land necessary for the execution of this work, "an emergency action to renew and expand the pumping system to the Benidorm WWTP" explained the Councilor for the Water Cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate. In turn, the Finestrat City Council had asked EPSAR to carry out the work to renew the pumping line of Cala de Finestrat.

In this regard, González de Zárate has specified that the emergency declaration is made “to reduce in the shortest possible time the discharges into the public hydraulic domain caused by the wastewater pumping station of Cala de Finestrat. “The work is necessary to avoid future breaks and discharges of wastewater” insisted the councillor, who added that “the renovation will imply a significant increase in the pumping capacity towards the Benidorm system”.

The councillor wanted to highlight that “in this region, we work together and seek the common good of the municipalities. Finestrat had a problem and the solution was to pass its wastewater to the Benidorm collectors. The emergency work has to go through our streets and we have given the go-ahead”.

The works themselves will consist of replacing the current fibre cement pumping line of the Finestrat EBAR with a new, wider ductile iron pipeline, 650 metres long, along Pajares Street, in the Benidorm area. “This work is very good for Benidorm because the new pipes will be larger and, therefore, the pumping capacity will be much greater.

In addition, once the replacement is finished, Pajares Street will have a new asphalt surface, which will improve its image and the circulation in the area” said González de Zárate. “This shows that we are united in issues such as water or purification and that Benidorm is a supportive city” he added.

The proposal approved by the Local Government Board also includes a request to the Department of Environment, Water, Infrastructure and Territory, through EPSAR, to carry out works to adapt the last section of the sewage collector on Avenida Armada Española, at the confluence with Jaime I. The councillor explained that this request is because “in the event of a breakdown in the pumping line to the La Vila Joiosa WWTP, all the flows pumped by the Finestrat WWTP and the Cruz Roja WWTP would flow into the Armada Española wastewater collector, which has a negative overflow problem, which needs to be corrected because it is no longer in a condition to receive new flow contributions”.

Lastly, González de Zárate has announced that a problem will also be solved that has to do with the bad smells that occasionally occur on Villajoyosa Avenue, near the gas station, caused by a pipe that causes some water stagnation "and which the neighbours have claimed on many occasions."
