Culture convenes the XXII 'Villa de Benidorm' Festive Music Contest in the pasodoble modality

05 April 2023
Concurso música festera

The Department of Culture has convened the XXII 'Villa de Benidorm' Festive Music Contest, which in this edition will take place in the pasodoble modality, as announced today by the mayor of the area, Jaime Jesús Pérez. As stated in the bases, approved this Monday by the Local Government Board, as many participants as wish may participate in the contest without age limits or compositions, which, yes, must be original, unpublished, and not have been performed in public before the jury's decision.

Pérez stressed that "our contest is one of the longest running in the Valencian Community and also one of the most anticipated by composers of festive music, who see in it an incentive to devote themselves to the creation of new works". In addition, "to encourage participation, every year an effort is made to call the contest in a different modality."

Thus, in 2022 the Christian march modality was chosen, while the previous year it was the turn of the Moorish march. In both cases, the winner of the contest was Azael Tormo, with the works 'Serra Gelada marcha Cristina and 'Andrés, músic i tagarino', the latter title with which the City Council wanted to pay homage to the fester and musician Andrés Teuler.

As in previous editions, this XXII 'Villa de Benidorm' Contest contemplates a single prize of 2,000 euros and a trophy sponsored by the City Council which, according to the rules, reserves the power to give the winning work a definitive name.

The bases, which will soon be published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Alicante (BOP) and in the Culture section of the municipal website (https://benidorm.org), establish that participants will have to send four copies of the score, bound, and attach a CD or 'pen drive' with the score and the 'particellas' in pdf format and an audio of it. Likewise, the motto of the work must be accompanied by a sealed envelope with the author's data and the definitive title of the work. In no case should the works be signed.

Those interested in participating in this contest must send the material by certified postal mail to the attention of the Department of Culture at the following address: Benidorm City Council. Department of Culture. XXII Festival Music Composition Contest 'Villa de Benidorm' 2023. Plaza SS.MM Los Reyes de España, 1. 03501 Benidorm.

The deadline for submitting works to the competition ends at 11:59 p.m. on July 31. Once this period has expired, the jury will assess the works in the following 15 calendar days and will communicate the motto of the winning pasodoble, which will be performed in the Extraordinary Concert to be held in September. If the jury deems it appropriate, the award could be void and its decision will be final.
