Benidorm will be the first city to launch the 'Escola de Frikis' of the UMH

19 October 2016
Benidorm será la primera ciudad en poner en marcha la ‘Escola de Frikis’ de la UMH

The aim is to promote the study of science among young

The department of Education in collaboration with the Center for Operations Research (CIO) of Miguel Hernández University(UMH) of Elche, will start in Benidorm the 'Escola de Frikis' to promote among the smallest the study of disciplines as leading as science, technology, mathematics and engineering. Benidorm is the first of the cities that will push the project. This morning, Benidorm City Hall and the UMH have signed the collaboration agreement that will allow the 'Escola de Frikis' to be into operation this course. The mayor Toni Pérez, accompanied by the rector of the university, Jesús Pastor and CIO director, Federico Botella presented the project to be put into operation this course, 2016-2017. Toni Pérez justified the commitment to the development of these disciplines in the defense that nowadays is done about the 'smart'. "There are many voices speaking, said the mayor, about intelligence, smart cities, smart tourist destinations, smart beaches" and what we want is that all this intelligence is "tipping over on citizenship," therefore the City Hall and the University have signed this agreement that will allow the promotion of "science, technology, engineering and mathematics among our school children from 7 to 12 years." As regards the matters covered by the 'Escola de Frikis', the rector of the UMH has explained the delay of Spain regarding the most developed countries, citing the example of the United States or United Kingdom, that these matters are already covered in the primary education. Or in China, where it is intended that the smallest learn the language of programming. Jesús Pastor, argues that science, technology, mathematics, engineering are classified in the world "as a career of the future" and where there will be a greater "demand for graduates". "Interestingly" in Spain it is where there are "few students who studies these disciplines." Pastor also emphasized the minimum number of women who enroll in these areas, compared to men. Therefore, "from the Escola de Frikis'" we must begin to reverse that "in the future we will be a country that can compete with the most advanced". Federico Botella, meanwhile, confirmed the forward-looking statements that establish "a demand for 750,000 jobs" by 2020 and more in 2030. The activities the 'Escola de Freaks' will take place in school hours. In this regard, stressed Toni Pérez, "the City Hall will make available a classroom project in 'José Llorca Linares Social Centre equipped with the necessary means". There will be "breadth of times" so that many children can enroll and the Education department will provide a grant for families to help them to fund the course. Enrollment in this activity has a projected cost of 60 euros.
