Benidorm obtains the Green Flag of Ecovidrio for collecting about 1.3 tons of glass during the summer

Benidorm has been recognized today with the 'Green Flag' of Ecovidrio for the results of the summer glass recycling campaign launched by the entity, which has resulted in almost 1.3 tons collected in the city, 3% more than the previous year. The mayor, Toni Pérez, has received this award from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition, Mireia Mollà, at an event held in the ‘Veles e Vents’ building in Valencia. An act in which the general director of Climate Change and Environmental Quality of the Generalitat Valenciana, Joan Piquer; the general director of Ecovidrio, José Manuel Núñez; and Roberto Fuentes, zone manager of the entity.

As the mayor has pointed out, the 'Green Flag' is “an award from the whole city, a recognition that comes to reward the commitment of civil society, the hospitality sector, its workers, neighbors and of the educators who have been raising awareness ”of this initiative. "All of them have shown that the qualification of 'sustainable city' that applies to Benidorm is a reality," he added, after highlighting the city's glass recycling figures: 56.4 per inhabitant and year compared to 18 kilos of the national average.

Pérez has assured that “the 'Green Flags Movement' is an ambassador to the millions of people who visit us from different latitudes of good practice in the Valencian Community and Spain when it comes to using resources in a more sustainable and rational way” . Likewise, it has emphasized that sustainability is “a fundamental axis for Benidorm” within the Smart Tourist Destination (DTI), as it is also “deepening the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.

In addition to Benidorm, it has received the ‘Green Flag’ the city of Denia and seven municipalities of the Spanish coast; while 16 other locations in the Valencian Community have met Ecovidrio's challenge of exceeding the levels of glass container collection last year. It is l’Alfàs del Pi, Alicante, Calpe, Jávea, Orihuela, Pilar de la Horadada, Santa Pola, Torrevieja, Villajoyosa, Benicasim, Oropesa del Mar, Vinaròs, Gandía, Oliva, Sueca and Valencia capital. In total, 15,960 tonnes have been recycled throughout the region.

The mayor congratulated Denia for this recognition and added that “hopefully next year all the municipalities present can obtain it”, thus reaching glass recycling levels similar to those of Benidorm.

In total, more than 4,700 hotel establishments throughout the Community have participated in this campaign.
