The gardening students of the T'Avalem employment program are in charge of the tasks of preparation of the land
Benidorm expands the urban gardens of l'Horta, doubling the number of plots
Benidorm City Council is going to expand the space allocated for urban gardens in l'Horta, doubling the current number of plots, as announced today by the Councilor for the Environment, Mónica Gómez. Specifically, "these orchards will be located next to those that are already operational in La Parva area, where the first preparation, adaptation, and provision of the land have already begun."
Thus, the first earthworks and clearing of the entire surface have already been carried out and the installation of irrigation pipes will begin shortly. Once all these actions are completed, the sleepers will be installed to separate each crop plot.
As explained by the councilor, who also manages the Department of Employment and Local Promotion, “the students of 'T'Avalem Benidorm Jove II' program will be in charge of these tasks of creating and adapting the new urban gardens and which will be supervised by the teaching staff and the municipal agronomist engineer.”
The creation of these gardens, she has detailed, "constitutes the practical part of this training and employment program, which began last April and lasts one year." During the first months, students have focused on theoretical training, while in the middle of the program, theoretical and practical sessions will be combined.
Gómez recalled that "currently there are about fifty urban gardens in operation on the Camí de la Parva, to which the 45 of this expansion project will be added in the middle of next year." In all of them, she indicated, “organic agriculture will be practiced for self-consumption.”
T’Avalem Benidorm program
'T'Avalem Benidorm Jove II' project is aimed at unemployed people aged 16 to 30 and has a Labora subsidy of 501,556.80 euros from the European Social Fund. This subsidy finances the hiring of participating people and the teaching team that is in charge of their training. The program also has a municipal contribution of 60,000 euros.
In the 2023 edition, ten young people are being trained in 'Auxiliary activities in nurseries, gardens and garden centers' and in 'Installation and maintenance of gardens and green areas'. The second group does so in 'Auxiliary operations of administrative and general services and in 'Administrative activities in the relationship with the client'.
