Benidorm expands the sensors of the drinking water network and advances towards the Smart City

Benidorm will expand the network of smart sensors for more efficient water management. This action, which is part of the integrated sustainable urban development strategy of Benidorm, will allow monitoring of leaks, seawater seepage and the quality of the drinking water network to improve the management and service of residents.

“Our neighbours deserve the highest quality and most efficient drinking water network to ensure that such an important resource reaches them in optimal conditions. Benidorm is an example of a sustainable city and with this new investment we show that we are at the forefront of the efficient use of resources,” Mayor Toni Pérez explained today. “Thanks to these new sensors, we will be able to continue making our city an example of success in managing water resources.”

The expansion of these smart meters will be carried out in the area of ​​action of the DUSI strategy, which covers the residential area of ​​the city. The sensors will collect all kinds of information about the city's water system, which will allow the Benidorm City Council to improve and carry out environmental control of drinking water and sewerage.

"By expanding the sensors and the information we receive about the water network, we will be able to improve the service and quality of life of the residents and tourists that we receive in Benidorm," said Toni Pérez. "We continue working to optimize public services to the maximum and move towards Benidorm's transition to a smart city by promoting innovation and sustainability."

This improvement of public services, co-financed 50% by ERDF funds, is included in the line of action 7 of the Benidorm DUSI strategy that seeks to "improve environmental quality and the ecological footprint of urban and peri-urban areas. ” The intervention responds to two objectives of the Benidorm EDUSI: thematic objective 6, "conserve and protect the environment and promote resource efficiency"; and strategic objective 3, “recovery and improvement of public spaces for citizens.”

This action, included in the city's DUSI strategy, is part of the firm commitment to efficient water management that earned Benidorm the national Sustainable City award in 2019. The optimization of resources and sustainability are part of the Benidorm brand: its vertical city urban model or the use of technologies for resource efficiency have turned the city into the paradigm of sustainable development.

THE EDUSI IN BENIDORM:

The Pluriregional Operational Program of Spain 2014-2020, and the Operational Program for Sustainable Growth (POCS) promote the DUSI strategy, for Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development, of which Benidorm, as established in the Resolution of May 4, 2018, published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) of the Order of the Third Call HFP/888/2017, has managed to opt for and obtain financing from the ERDF aid of 10 Million Euros, through its EDUSI BENIDORM strategy.

The EDUSI BENIDORM is made up of a series of thematic, specific, strategic and operational objectives, encompassed through 13 Lines of Action, whose social, environmental, economic and urban impact on the city aims to transform a delimited urban area of the city into the to intervene and regenerate comprehensively, for the sake of producing an impact and global improvement in the city.
