González de Zárate points out that only two palm trees and one jacaranda have had to be removed from among the more than 30,000 trees in public roads and parks
Benidorm emerges from the recent wind episode without any major incidents thanks to preventative work
The recent windstorm in Benidorm, which triggered an orange alert and saw gusts occasionally exceeding 100 kilometres per hour, has concluded in the city with virtually no significant incidents, minimal property damage, and no injuries. This is even though the city boasts over 30,000 trees in its streets and parks.
The Councillor for Parks and Gardens, José Ramón González de Zárate, reviewed the actions taken in response to the storm and emphasised that it ended "remarkably well" thanks to "the preventative work carried out throughout the year, including pruning and other tasks performed by the contracted company, under the supervision of municipal technicians." The councillor noted that despite winds exceeding 100 kilometres per hour, "we only had three major incidents on public roads." Specifically, a palm tree on Paseo de Colón, another in Elche Park, and a jacaranda on Francia Street. "In the case of the palm trees, they were cut down and removed due to the danger they posed, even though they hadn't yet fallen," he clarified.
"The tree pruning and ongoing work throughout the year are yielding results," stated González de Zárate, who also took the opportunity to thank the Local Police and Fire Department for their work in closing and monitoring the parks. "There have also been some fallen branches, but nothing serious," he added. He also indicated that many incidents "occurred in private homes and residential areas, where we also assisted the Local Police and Fire Department."
Therefore, the councilman affirmed that the City Council "is satisfied because, with almost 32,000 trees in public streets and parks, we have had only three noteworthy cases." Thus, in addition to the incidents on public roads, there were also fallen branches, a white poplar, a palm tree, and an oriental plane tree on private properties. All of these trees were removed from the street to prevent accidents.
