Benidorm claims the Ministry to immediately solve the university scholarships of last year

Benidorm City Council is going to demand that the University Department solve "as soon as possible" the call for University Studies Scholarships of last year. This is reflected in a motion of the councilors of Youth and Education, Jaime Jesús Pérez and Maite Moreno, that the plenary session will vote on August 30 and in which there is an impact on the "very serious damage" that this delay is supposing "due to second consecutive year ”for“ Valencian students ”who opted for these scholarships.

As both councilors have pointed out, every year thousands of students from the Community apply for this regional scholarship, among them, “a large number of young people in Benidorm”, who “a few weeks after starting the 2021/2022 academic year are still uncertain to know whether or not they will have to take charge of the enrollment of the last course ”. An uncertainty that, in turn, "makes it difficult for them to plan and organize the course that is now beginning."

Pérez and Moreno have explained that "these grants from the Department of Universities are granted to students who are not beneficiaries of the scholarships that the Ministry calls for not meeting some requirements, for example the number of credits passed." However, "due to their economic situation, these students need these grants from the Regional Government to be able to carry out their university studies."

The councilors have recalled that "the university student unions themselves have denounced this situation and regretted that the failure to meet deadlines by the Government harms thousands of Valencian students who need these scholarships to continue their university studies." For this reason, both councilors have stressed that "it is essential that the Ministry immediately solve the call for grants of last year, making effective the payment of the 5 million euros for these scholarships."

As the councilors have advanced, the motion that will be voted on in full "also requires the Ministry to meet the deadlines established in the calls from now on to avoid further damage to the student body", which "has been suffering from this situation for two consecutive years" .

"We want the commitment to be firm this time, because last September the Minister Carolina Pascual assured that from the 2020/2021 academic year the calls would be solved within the same university year and it has not been like that", they have added.

Finally, Pérez and Moreno have indicated that compliance with these deadlines will also allow “the Universities to launch their own grants in time and form, which are incompatible with those of the Ministry and those of the University Department, and not they have been able to summon as the regional scholarships have not been solved yet ”.
