Benidorm is carrying out work at Plaza de SS MM los Reyes de España to avoid water leaks into L’Aigüera car park
Benidorm City Council has begun work at Plaza de Sus Majestades Los Reyes de España (Town Hall Square) to eliminate recurring water leaks in the L’Aigüera underground parking garage through the existing grates above. This project is similar to one carried out last year in another part of the square.
The work involves replacing 88 meters of the existing drain with a grey, micro-granite gutter on a mass concrete base. A gutter is a channel-like strip, often found along some roads, designed to carry rainwater away.
In this case, in addition to installing the gutter, waterproofing will be carried out beneath it and one meter on each side by supplying and installing a bituminous membrane with a folded structural joint. The gutter will be shaped like a half-round channel to collect surface runoff.
The project, as explained by the Councillor for Urban Scene, Francis Muñoz, is included in the annual investment allocation for the maintenance and upkeep of the parking garage and has a budget of approximately €62,000. Muñoz indicated that the work will be completed in March.
The councilor emphasized that this project achieves three objectives. “Firstly, we are eliminating the leaks into the lower area where the parking garage is located, but at the same time, we are facilitating the cleaning of the area, which was very difficult with the grate, and we are also improving accessibility,” he stated. Muñoz specified that the very existence of the existing drain was causing damage to the pavement due to the expansion of the metal during periods of high temperatures. “This way, we will no longer have this problem,” Muñoz added.
